3. Good call on "River Kwai"!
I haven't seen that movie since I was a kid, but I remember the scene where the allied officer was protesting to the Japanese officer in charge of the POW camp that their mistreatment of the prisoners was in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions, and the guard just laughed in his face....and it clearly made the point that this was the difference between decent, civilized people and those with no respect for humanity....
Thanks for the reminder...time to rent that one again!

4. But how can they have brought up the Geneva Conventions
during WWII, since the Conventions weren't adopted until 1949? An anachronism in the movie?

5. 1929 Geneva Conventions, most likely
:hi:

http://ask.yahoo.com/ask/20020212.html

"The second Geneva Convention in 1907 extended protection to wounded armed forces at sea and to shipwreck victims. The third convention in 1929 detailed the humane treatment of prisoners of war. The fourth convention in 1949 revised the previous conventions and addressed the rights of civilians in times of war. This convention is said to be the cornerstone of modern humanitarian law. It was amended in 1977 with two protocols that further protect civilians during wartime and address armed conflicts within a nation. "

7. Aha. The 1949 Conventions are what I had in mind because
of the current controversy. Thanks for the clarification.

6. FReepers minds are so twisted, they probably view those movies
as them being the Allied and American captives, and the liberals being the torturing prison guards.

They are sick, and I mean legitimately mentally ill
