Local Hospital might give workers same-sex benefits in 2008
NHRMC might give workers same-sex benefits in 2008

The largest employer in New Hanover County is considering offering same-sex partner benefits to its employees.

Considered a bold move by some, such a policy could catapult New Hanover Regional Medical Center into the middle of a nationwide debate regarding definitions of human relationships and rights.

Benefits such as health and life insurance traditionally have been reserved for employees, their children and their lawfully wedded husbands or wives.

Not anymore.

Even as state legislators across the country pass constitutional amendments to ban gay marriages, a soaring number of companies are adding same-sex partner benefits.
