Got into a debate with a coworker about Bill O'Reilly.
She loves him.

Oddly enough, she claims to love Jon Stewart too.

She was all over the map in this discussion. Agrees with O'Reilly that the US should actually be torturing MORE than we are now, in order to "win" the "war on terror".

Agrees that the invasion of Iraq was unnecessary, and that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Says, however, that we're entitled to torture prisoners because (a) "they're torturing us first" (couldn't give an example), and (b) "to keep our good name" (whereupon I spit up my coffee).

I think she was in over her head, but unwilling to acknowledge it. A waste of a half-hour on a Friday afternoon.

6. laundry
Seems to me that in the situation presented the first thing would be to make sure that the person in question actually had a brain to wash.I'm usually loathe to question someone's intelligence, but in this case it's nearly unavoidable.I'd almost be afraid to ask said person to explain the logic behind we have to torture to keep our good name.I'd be fearful their head might explode.Or maybe mine would.

I see good people with high levels of function totally buy into the propaganda from the liberla media.
It's especially evident in NRA members.
Heartbreaking because that toothpaste seems to be 100% out of the tube.

4. We should torture to keep our good name??????????????
So ... she thinks that there are countries around the world who would think less of us if we DIDN'T torture?? Does she honestly believe that world leaders will stand up at the UN and cheer, "Alright! The USA is torturing people ... wooohoo! Go get 'em!" :eyes:

No wonder their side always speaks in repetitive sound bites. Every time one of them takes a shot a "winging it" they don't make any sense.

9. Jeez - Some people will never learn
Just because everyone has a RIGHT to an opinion doesn't mean everyone needs to express his/her opinion!

10. The problem with the opinions on their side is ..
they never have INFORMED opinions. They simply repeat what they've heard some RW pundit say. There's no thought ... no questions ... no logic. The words go in the ear and out the mouth without ever making a pit stop at the brain!

11. yep. And then when they get in an argument with someone who has
actual facts to dispute them, they get all angry and try harder to justify their uninformed opinions!

BTW - I like your Gore picture!

The one group of people we aren't torturing is terrorists.

7. Apparently, like most mass consumers of media, she responds to good
...sound bites.

Rush Limbaugh for instance, is popular because he expresses illogical arguments in ways that seem to make good common sense.
(social programs create poor people because before we had welfare no one had to apply for benefits)

These eloquently delivered observations only succeed when the studio is devoid of critical argument, which is how O'Reilly, Limbaugh, and Hannity work.

If the typical listener or viewer likes something they hear, or the way it's said, they'll record the statement as a fact.

Until they find out otherwise.

I'm glad you took patient time to enlighten (or at least confuse) your co-worker. Very good.

12. Tell your coworker to kill her own fucking TV
TV can be informative provided you know how to use the damn remote, but beyond that, I guarantee your brain and the inquisitive nature of your mind will survive far better without television than with it. Again, tell your coworker to kill her damn television.

Wow...talk about being all over the place - sounds like she's more caught up in the cult of personality than anything else. Give her the real dirt on people like O'Reilly, just to get to think about things a little bit...
