One Year since Washington DC War Protest. Who was there?
My dad reminded me today that it was one year ago today that my grandma had passed away. At the time she died I had just arrived in DC to join in the War Protest where I met some of the coolest and smartest people I've had the pleasure of meeting. We were 'crazy left wing nutcases' back then as we were portrayed by media talking heads. We didn't even get any media coverage. "The war is still popular" they thought, so they didn't bother showing the 500,000+ that showed up that day as not only the Coward President but also Spineless Democrats fleed town. A few Democrats remained, but most didn't want to associate with the 'Sheehan Liberals' or 'Micheal Moore Democrats'.

Since that day Bush's approval ratings have flipped. Support of the war has flipped. Scandal after greedy scandal has been exposed. Incompetency in the extreme has shown through. Mistrust of this government is so high now that 36% of Americans believe we are being lied to about what happened on 9/11. 42% believe there is at least a cover up of some kind according to Zogby.

One year later we are poised to take our Congress back. By show of hands who was there that day? I am thoroughly convinced that it was that gathering of like minds from all over the country which gave us all the strength to get where we are now. We found out that we weren't crazy, because there were just too damn many of us. That helped us with the confidence to spread our thoughts to others in our communities. It gave us the confidence to call this 'President' for the bumbling fool that he is and know you weren't alone in thinking that, when there were many before that would not have had that confidence. While not covered in the media on any large scale, it gave a wake up call to them that we are NOT the fringe element of the democratic party that they thought we were and gave the same message to the Senators and Congress People who refused to show their support for what was percieved that the time as a 'dying movement'.

So, Im just curious, who was also there that day? To those who were, and those who should have been, here is a video commemorating that day that I made shortly after I returned from the rally:

2. I was there and I can't believe it's
been a year already. There were so many people there, from all over the country and they still ask why aren't people out on the streets opposing this war? They just don't cover it when there is a huge protest so they make it not there. But we know it was.

I was just thinking about that tonight.
Seeing the Vietnam Memorial with the temporary Iraq Memorial next to it (so many more names now!) was incredibly sobering. It made the march even more important to me.

17. I disagree
I mean I see what your saying as far as current policy and current atrocities are the same as before. But the whole political landscape has changed since then. Republicans are on the defensive for once. People aren't afraid of the bullying tactings of calling someone a traitor or unamerican or terrorist sympathiser for disagreeing with this administrations failed policies. One year ago that wasn't the case. Only the brave spoke out then.

Here in central Virginia the George Felix Allen for Senate signs are out in full force. Glad to hear things are changing elsewhere! When you live in the middle of "red," regardless of how much internet reading you do, it is hard to see things changing. Thanks for the reminder.

It was the first time that I'd been in a city that large and I drove there by myself like an idiot!

Luckily, I was with a great group - lonestarnot, tsuki, Kat, puravidadreamin' and her son. It was so wonderful to shout, "Liar!" at the White House.

Time for another march, I say. Who's with me??

28. I was.
Heckling RimJob and his 100 freep creeps, ironically parked in front of the J Edna Hoover building. Some joker in American Flag face paint was continually ranting some pro wrestler promo. The lame Protest Warriors were there "leading" us (according to them, anyway). Amazing there were SO many age groups, veterans groups, grandmas, middle class, rich, conservative, poor, tourists - all united for one cause.

Saw some Billionaires for Bush and Distressed American. 400 to 500 thousand people, and only local media BARELY covered it. National media was like "Hundreds protested the Iraq war today . . .. pfft. And in other news, Great Leader Bush said today . ."

experience. It irked me no end to see the sparse to no coverage on TV. We SWAMPED DC. And, if you'll remember, they closed down one of the metro lines (the blue line?) for "maintenance." Thousands of people never made it to the march. But there must have been half a million people there anyway.

56. I was calling my mom that day . . . she was home in Silver Spring MD . ..
I'm asking "are you seeing any of this?"

"No."

"NO one's covering this? There's got to be about 400 thousand people here. There's people on every block of the Nation's Capital (aside: not on the Mall, because conveniently there was a national book fair, where I saw Tom Wolfe and that dollman neo-lib Thomas Friedman). How can you NOT cover this?"

" . . . oh wait, here's something on CNN. Where are you at?"

"Constitiution and 12th, there's people everywhere! Where are they . . ."

" . . . oh wait, now they're talking about something else. Sorry."

It pretty much went on like this throughout the day.

I really don't know why we can't things together like that. It was just such a huge protest and there hasn't been one like it since. I went to a World Can't Wait organized protest about 5 months later, and was extremely disappointed by the low turn out, along with the low turnout of the 3 Year Anniversary Protests. After being at the DC protest last year, I really thought it was the start of something big.

61. well lemme see. Cowards are now into defending their torturing
instead of denying it's existence. Secret torture holes have been exposed, and he's down to turdy-tree and a turd. It's getting better. But Iran showdown is in the planning stage with 45 days left to invade. So in answer to your question, not much.

51. It was a great crowd
I was up front behind Cindy and Jesse, next to Cornell West. What a day. We were just talking about how we came through the trees after we had done the round and Joan Baez was singing Joe Hill. I swear I thought I had been transported back in time. Lots of young folks that day. I thought they must have experienced something energizing and lasting. Thanks for the reminder.

57. We were here preparing for Rita and relief post-Katrina
We were supposed to be on the Peace Train from New Orleans to DC. Katrina and Rita changed all that.

68. I was there.
I volunteered for UFPJ and was amazed by the turnout and how smoothly it went despite some glitches. I like to think it had some long term impact but sometimes kick myself for not doing more. When will it end? How does it end?

80. Hi, Shar!
We really should do something next year about a Midwest DU meet-up. I'd love to see ya again and hang out either here or in Detroit...

81. I'd love to do one here.
Or we could split the difference and do one in Grand Rapids or Saugatuck or somewhere like that.

I'll be in Chicago for a few days for work in late January.

83. Late January would work for me, providing it's not Artic type weather.
PM me with the details and I'll see if we can work something out with some of the other Chicago area DU'ers...

84. I'm not sure I'll be able to do a meetup
We have our annual meeting from Monday-Wednesday. I'm planning to come in over the weekend, though, and stay with my former boss who works in Chicago for another company now. Maybe she'd be up to coming to a meetup with me, if we can arrange it. I'll let you know as we get closer.

Yeah, Chicago in January wouldn't have been my first choice. We've usually had these meetings in Dallas or Atlanta. I don't know why we're having it in Chicago this year.
