2006 Roosevelt Reading Festival: Robert Rosen

This symposium is part of the Roosevelt Reading Festival in Hyde Park, New York. This event was held at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum and home of FDR National Historic Site.

What Terrorists Want: Understanding the Enemy, Containing the Threat
Louise Richardson

Louise Richardson talks about what drives terrorists and provides an outline of her ideas on how to reduce terrorism worldwide. Professor Richardson argues that the Bush administration's launching of the war on terror was a mistake because it played right into the hands of Al Qaeda. The talk was hosted by Borders Books and Music in Washington, DC.

Louise Richardson is the executive dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard (www.radcliffe.edu). Her other books include: "The Roots of Terrorism" and "Democracy and Counterterrorism."

25. A Well-Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun...
On Monday, September 25 at 1:00 am

A Well-Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control in America
Saul Cornell

Saul Cornell discusses his book "A Well-Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control in America" an appearance on American University's WAMU public radio. He explores the opposing sides of the gun control debate, saying both sides of the gun debate point to the 2nd amendment of the Constitution to support their views. According to professor Cornell, both sides base their opinions on a flawed understanding of the amendment. Prof. Cornell says that gun rights supporters focus on "the right to bear arms," whereas the gun control proponents look at the preamble, which addresses having a "well-regulated militia." According to Prof. Cornell, the 2nd amendment guarantees neither an individual right nor a right of the state but a civic right to protect the nation, state and community.

Saul Cornell is an associate professor of history at Ohio State University and is the director of the Second Amendment Research Center at the John Glenn Institute. He specializes in constitutional history and has studied at University of Sussex. He received his BA from Amherst College and a MA and Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of "The Other Founders: Anti-Federalism and the Dissenting Tradition in America" and the editor of "Whose Right to Bear Arms Did the Second Amendment Protect?"
