2. I'm baffled by the blind chavez love
but i'm equally baffled by this blind chavez disdain.

Whatever Chavez is he's not simply a "petty populist."

3. My wish is for a bit more Decorum amongst the world's elected leaders
not for the sake of vanity. Just out of respect for each other, the world's citizens and the Rule of Law.

7. Thumbs up to that!

May the world's leaders act more like leaders, and less like school children. Especially at the U.N.

4. "Devil" was a metaphor...
Chavez didn't mean he was literally the devil. Some of us here think otherwise.

5. We won't win much in '06 unless we win the world back on our side
Chavez has already done that. Maybe we can learn a thing or two about that.

16. I would ask, why have so many Du'ers made Chavez into a personal crusade?
Is he running for office here in America? Is he going to help us take back the House and senate?

Why are we so focused on debating whether Chavez is a good guy or a bad guy instead of America and American politics?

19. I would ask, why have YOU started another Chavez thread?
If you want to move the discussion on to other topics, then do just that. You want to see more discussion about "America and American politics", then start a thread about THAT -- you know, be PROactive instead of REactive.

another Chavez thread. :eyes:

17. There are petty dictators, and there are petty populists.
One is on the right, the other is on the left. Both tend to be egocentric, self-serving, and petty.

ANY world leader who uses the floor of the U.N. like a primary school playground is by definition petty. May the world find more leaders of more distinction, and less childishness.

The people of the world deserve better, and the U.N. deserves better.

20. Petty?
I love it when people toss out condescending terms from their lofty heights, with no regard for what they actually mean. Just what was petty about Chavez's speech? (Hint: look up the definition of the word first)

12. There are connections -- Pelosi and Rangle show that it's business
as usual with their responses-- it doesn't bode well when the "leadership" still kowtows to Beltway defeatist mindsets...

It could have been Mitterand, Merkel, Castro, Paris frikkin Hilton saying it-- it doesn't matter. The fact that Pelosi and Rangle danced the regimes dance ratcheted up the issue.

And the "well they had to try and do something or they'd be accused by the Repubs" BS line is just that BS Defeatism.

It has a whole hell of a lot to do with 06.

One was elected. The other was not. One was the object of a US backed coup. The other was not. One is making an effort to help ordinary US citizens. The other is not.

Any questions?

edited to add "ordinary"

21. Oh my goodness
Chavez is not the problem. Bush is. Has Chavez invaded Iraq, endorsed torture? I agree with the OP, GET OVER IT. Concentrate on '06. In case no one's noticed Chavez is not the president of the US. You will notice that much of this controversy is not just based on what Chavez said. A lot of it is based on debate on Dem's reaction. The Dem's say nothing during the torture bill debate but what Chavez says are worth a public statement? Hmm....
