Starbucks boosts prices of coffee drinks
I never saw the appeal of buying overpriced coffee there. I'll get it for free at work. That $3 a day turns out to several hundred dollars a year that I have better uses for.

SEATTLE -- Got three bucks? That and a nickel will buy you a coffee drink at Starbucks. Starbucks Corp. said Thursday that it planned to raise prices of its lattes, cappuccinos, drip coffee and other drinks by 5 cents, or an average of 1.9%.

The increase, which goes into effect Oct. 3 at all company-operated stores in the U.S. and Canada, will mark the first time the company has boosted drink prices in two years.

Starbucks also is increasing the price of its coffee beans by about 50 cents per pound, or an average of 3.9%. That's the first price increase for whole beans in nine years, spokeswoman Valerie O'Neil said.

Starbucks isn't raising prices on the prepared drinks it sells in refrigerated cases.

1. I don't drink Starbucks, never did, never will.
People are fools to make the owner rich from something that is not needed.

Three bucks? I buy a 12 ounce jar of Folgers Instant Coffee at KMart for $4.99 and it will last me for three months drinking just one cup a day.

11. Maybe some of us like Starbucks
To call us "fools" for enjoying what you personally have deemed not needed is really uncool.

There are a hell of a lot of "fools" according to you, all across the globe, who enjoy Starbucks. Take a look at how many locations there are worldwide, it might surprise you.

3. I've got SBUX in my portfolio. BECAUSE it exploits decadence.
Any company that can turn 50 cents worth of material into a $3 sale is worth owning because great profits can be had from customers who clearly don't care about money.

I hate the reality that coffee beans are one of the worst ag products with respect to producing nutrient calories per acre. But how do you stop it? Well, one way is to make coffee too expensive to drink!

So, go right ahead and add another nickle Dudes, I support you. There is no such thing as a friendly cup of coffee with respect to ecological energetics. I'll be here collecting my dividends and handing them over to international environmental causes working against coffee plantations.

4. my theory
people go to coffee shops like starbucks for casual first dates and $3 for a coffee is probably a lot cheaper than $10 drinks at a club and it's a very casual atmosphere to meet people.

But other than that, I can't see why people would pay that much for coffee if they weren't looking to get laid.

6. that's a good way to look at it
I know people who drop 5 bucks a day at Starbucks-- :wtf:

I go every friday after all my classes and get a nice big caramel frapp. It's a nice way to unwind. But it's a treat.

I brew my own coffee (Dunkin' Donuts) and a pound for 7.99$ lasts me a good month.

5. I doubt that the price increase will translate into higher wages

8. What about the variety?
I'm not much of a coffee person but I've gone to Caribou Coffee a few times near here, and they have nice drinks that you can't find at a convenient store or at work.
