Enjoy your last weekend as a Democrat.
Yes, I know. You thought the GOP was the latest incarnation of the Nazi Party. I did too. But, as it turns out, they’re little more than modern-day Brownshirts -- common thugs tasked with bullying you into submission.

It’s your party, the Democratic Party, which is standing down as your Bill of Rights is surrendered to the latest Fuehrer. It’s your party, the Democratic Party, that is standing down as Dick Cheney is given the power to decide when you can be held without charges, when you can be disappeared to a secret prison, and when you can be tortured to death. It’s your party which trusted your future to the likes of John McCain.

And while your rights are being surrendered, Harry Reid is quietly wandering into the forest to gather nuts to prepare for another cold winter. John Kerry is again leaving the country, perhaps figuratively, likely literally. Miss Modulation will once again read a beautiful declaration of vigilance before retreating to her New York hideaway.

Nobody is lifting a finger for you. But in a few weeks you will go to the polls to cast votes for the fools who trusted your country to a man who previously crapped on the face of his own wife to serve his political aspirations.

“Subpoena power,” you say? Forget it. Next week, the Dry-powder Gang will give Dick Cheney the power to decide who can be subpoenaed, what the word crime really means, and which members of society are exempt from your silly system of laws.

And don’t buy what Randi Rhodes and company are selling today. We knew all along that the Republicans would go for this. It’s the Democrats who sold us out.

21. Maybe the Drama Queen Faction would like to all vote for Nader.
Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 03:45 PM by grytpype
The country has been taken over by some very evil and very incompetent people. They are calling the shots, not the Dems.

Does anyone think if the Dems were in charge we would be talking about torturing people? Of course not.

But a lot of people here who ARE NOT THINKING VERY CLEARLY are blaming the Dems for all this.

Why? Because they didn't jump on the land mine like Karl Rove wanted them to? Because they didn't hand Rove an issue to beat them with by making a futile effort to stop the torture bill? Because they didn't put on a show for you?

If the Repugs want to legalize torture, we can't do anything about it. They're the freaking majority right now.

And there is only one way to change that, and that is for the Dems to win the midterms.

If letting the Repugs have their way (for now!) on torture will help the Dems win, then f*ck yes, let them have their way. And sadly, a lot of Americans are too stupid and evil themselves to understand what's wrong with torture. Not us, obviously, but a lot of people, and those stupid motherf*ckers vote.

There is only ONE DAMN THING I want the Dems to do right now and that is WIN THE MIDTERMS. Nothing will change for the better unless that happens. The Dems need to do whatever is necessary to win the damn election. And if you can't understand that, just go f*cking vote for Ralph Nader, because you're worthless.

39. He would have to have a lot more than a snowballs' chance to deserve vote.
Dems have to start winning elections.

They have to fricking win elections.

They can't win by appeasing every liberal impulse, there are too many mouthbreathers in this damn country for that, and the Repugs have all the damn money and own everything.

If liberals were 80% of the country and owned the media, then fine, but they're not and they don't.

Sorry to interject some reality, but there it is.

I don't buy into this "isolationist" BS. We are NOT alone. I will never give up on my country just as I will ALWAYS remain a Democrat. It's who I am.

IMO, Randi isn't "selling" anything. She is speaking to what she believes to be true.

Aren't YOU a Dem? Have you "sold out"? Do you really believe that Conyers is selling us out? Waxman? Feingold?

10. Much of what you say rings true ...
but we can replace "sell-out" Democrats in their next Primaries, but still stay true to our Democratic Ideals.

Here's an excellent site that has all the information those of us who feel totally disenfranchised by the "corporate loving elements" of OUR political party can seek justified retribution.

http://www.voidnow.org/2006/08/07/will_they_get_your_vote.php

As long as Our Votes are not totally Diebolded, We The People can FORCE our Representatives to do the right thing. We need to let them know that just because they NOW represent us, doesn't make it a done deal - that despite their large campaign chests, if they sell-out their interests to placing the Mega-Corporation's welfare above that of the Average Wage Worker, they will be replaced by the democrat who runs against them in their next primary. :grr: :nuke:

Please remember that it was The Will of The People of The USA that ended The Vietnam War, NOT, I repeat NOT - by the initiative of *any* of The Democratic Party Leaders. It's time to keep voting Democratic, BUT put the incumbents "on notice" that they are being watched closely to ensure that first and foremost they support the welfare of The Average Working American in their district and/or state.

You've missed the whole "minority party" meme.

It's ALL over DU today.

Why, we little ol' Dems can't do nuttin' - we're the MINORITY party, you know.

And besides, when we WIN all of a sudden Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu and Ken Salazar will all of a sudden gorw a pair, and will JUMP on the "Impeach Bush" bandwagon!

Yesiree, they'll be right there with Conyers and Kucinich.

And Hillary will do whatever the convention wisdom OF THE HOUR tells her to do.

You're spot on, and I hope I get to post this before the "inside politics" folks here send you off to dreamland.

Makes you a Karl Rove Democrat.

Trying to discourage Democrats from voting should be an instantly bannable offense.

That's the problem. There is no alternative. Murtha is corageous but the people write him off as a crackpot. It doesn't matter whose hand is on the throttle of the economic trainwreck coming. Americans survived the Great Depression because people were essencially more civil with each other and because a large portion of the population lived on farms and could at least produce food. When the economic displacement coming occurs, chaos will rule.

86. I Have No Desire To Teach You The Concepts Of A Strawman Nor Waste My
time debating such off-tangent concepts. You can do some very simple self research on forging a strawman argument and it would take you less than a minute to find examples that will grant you the knowledge to realize how obvious a strawman your argument was. A conversation of "I find your overly dramatic interpretation in the OP to be comical" with a response of "I guess that means the rights of Americans are a joke to you" could be used as a textbook example of a forging a strawman argument. But you can find that out for yourself.

As far as intelligent debate goes, I have zero motivation to actually lend credence to nor debate the overdramatized premise in the OP. I also would have no desire to debate someone claiming Jeb bush is an alien that is forming an army of pod people.

Sure I am diappointed thus far in how Dems fought this thing but it is hardly over. Congress adjourns next Friday. There's a good chance this bill will not have enough time to go through the whole process. It may have to wait until the next session.

And starting Monday, I will STILL be a Democrat thank you very much.

Stay informed, keep communicating, donate to your favorite candidates, volunteer, get your friends and family to vote. Isn't this democracy worth it, or are you content to sit back and let it go to pot? If so, please step aside. The rest of us have got work to do.

102. What would you have the current Congress do? The Dems?
To be fair, we don't have the votes to uphold committee action, stop a vote or defeat bills we disfavor.

I agree that the Administration is taking their advantage to the limit, constitutionally and legislatively, but I disagree that the Democrats "sold us out". We don't hold the power you say we will surrender to Cheney next week. The Republican Congress, hand in hand with the Administration, does and has sold the country out.

And, to be honest, our "silly system of laws", however flawed, seems better than any other alternative I've seen.

Thanks.

109. Here's the problem..
.... the Democrats don't know how to frame this issue to make it a winner electorially.

It's really that simple.

I was mega pissed yesterday, and am still pissed - but here's the problem. If they try to stop this bill it will cost them any possibility of winning in November - because Average Americans don't give a shit about torture, don't give a shit about civil liberties, they don't even understand most of them.

The Republicans out-played us again, and this time I'm getting over it because they have trapped the Dems into a no win situation.

Getting control of SOME of congress is more important than ANYTHING right now. If we do, we can undo some of this bullshit. Also, the international reach of some of this verbiage is nil. Any torturer who thinks this law will protect their ass is a moron as well as a sadist.
