Did my man Chavez steal that line from Woody Allen?
Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 02:04 PM by LaPera
People have always stolen Allen's one liners for decades and pretend they they made them up...apparently Chavez too...I love both Chavez & Allen---Allen is extremely liberal, so I'm sure he wouldn't mind if it indeed was his line.

The line is used in the film, Deconstructing Harry 1997...Allen's character,( Harry Block) suspects that Billy Crystal character (the Devil) is really the Devil... Because, as Allen asks Elizabeth Shue's character, whenever Crystal (character) is around "don’t you get a distinct smell of sulfur in the air" - mostly because Crystal is stealing Allen's girl, Elizabeth Shue,...As we find out later Crystal is indeed the Devil, and there's a hilarious scene with both of them in Hell and references to the lying fucking republicans and other assholes.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118954/

A very funny, underrated movie by the way.

Memorable quotes from the film…

Harry Block: You have air conditioning down here?
The Devil: Sure! Fucks up the ozone layer!

Doris: You have no values. With you its all nihilism, cynicism, sarcasm, and orgasm.
Harry Block: Hey, in France I could run for office with that slogan, and win!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Devil: It's like Vegas. You're up, you're down, but in the end the house always wins. Doesn't mean you didn't have fun.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Block: Tradition is the illusion of permanence.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Block: Does the president think of fucking every woman he meets? Oh sorry, bad example.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Block: The most important words in the English language are not "I love you" but "It's benign."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Block: Between air conditioning and the Pope, I chose air conditioning.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Block: I'm a guy who can't function well in life but can in art.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Block: Six shrinks later, three wives down the line, and I still can't get my life together.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Block: The two most important things are the work that you choose and sex.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Burt: Do you care even about the holocaust, or do you think it never happened?
Harry Block: Not only do I know that we lost 6 million, but the scary thing is that records are made to be broken

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Devil: You ever fuck a blind girl?
Harry Block: No. That I never did.
The Devil: Oh, they're so grateful.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joan: So now you're blaming me because I don't go out with you enough, to meet strangers to FUCK!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lucy: You take everyone's suffering and turn it into gold, LITERARY GOLD!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Block: I think you're the opposite of a paranoid. I think you go around with the insane delusion that people like you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry: Cookie, do you know what a black hole is?
Cookie: Sure, that's how I make my livin'!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cookie: How come you got all this money?
Harry Block: I always keep hooker money around, you know, 'cause I once paid by check years ago and the I.R.S. killed me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doris: He's betting everything on physics and pussy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Block: Every hooker I ever speak to tells me that it beats the hell out of waitressing. Waitressing's gotta be the worst fucking job in the world.

1. no it's a very old line
it used to be a cliche, i've read it in 19th century novels, i think it was a biblical reference that the devil was known by the whiff of sulphur about him

no way woody allen made it up, he was merely using a once-common turn of phrase

i've even heard of said of a flea market promoter! :-)

2. Makes sense Chavez is a devout Catholic. Chavez has said:
"I am a Catholic and a Christian and a very committed Christian".

3. I think "your man Chavez"
just threw every single Democrat Senator and Congressional memeber a huge hot potato. Perfect timing too, just before an important election Chavez draws a line that every Senator and Congressman will have to address in a popularity fiasco that is being egged on in the blogesphere, sure to be dripping with Rove sauce before long. "My man Chavez" what a wanker.
