NY District 20: Kirsten Gillibrand response to Sweeney attack ads. Video.
I have yet to see this on TV, though my friend did and tipped me off about it, so I found it on-line. Kirsten Gillibrand has risen above the tone of the John Sweeney attack ads by airing this classy response, featuring Academy Award-nominated actor David Strathairn, who reprises his persona of Edward R. Murrow from Good Night, and Good Luck. Excellent job, IMHO, and I really believe that she has a shot at defeating Sweeney (who went to Florida in 2000 to ensure a Bush* win), this time around... :woohoo:

Here's the short version, if you're pressed for time...:)

1. Spitz and Clinton should be judged on whether Sweeney is re-elected
We all know that they will win, but will they have coattails? Clinton and Spitz should be working this district non-stop.

2. Good point, my friend! I absolutely agree with you!
But there is good news! MoveOn has acquired temporary office space and is planning on being in the area (Glens Falls) to help out with this. But we need all the help that we can get with this. Clinton and Spitzer could well make the difference! For once, we have a viable and well-qualified candidate and we can't blow this chance...:bounce:

5. There was an article in The Glens Falls Post Star a few years ago
that said that Sweeney had this job for life, if he wanted it. Scary thought. But he is the successor to Gerry Solomon, still revered in this area, and most people around here just vote Republican. *sigh*:-(

Sweeney rarely has had a challenger, usually runs unopposed, and in the last election he took on Doris Kelly, a nice lady, but not very impressive, and the only reason that she beat John Coleman in the primary was because she had Dennis Kucinich's phone list, so more people had heard of her when they went to the polls.

But this time, I think Sweeney is in real trouble. He's identified with Bush*, since he went to Florida in 2000, and this is what brought Joe Lieberman down. Perhaps I'm being too optimistic, but Kirsten Gillibrand is smart, well-spoken and very well informed. And she seems to have connections. I'm hoping that this our chance and we can manage to unseat him this time around...:bounce:

What are your chances further downstate? I thought that they sounded better than ours, actually... But we need to win both races and take back the House. This is our only chance to take back our country.:kick:

6. I am not sure
Kelly and Sweeney seem the most venerable (outside on NYC - don't know what goes on down there), but they are also rated "safe" by CQ.

I don't know if Spitz and Clinton can swing anything, other then their victories.

8. Well, then Spitzer and Sen. Clinton are doing their party a disservice.
I have no doubt that they'll both win with margins to spare. They have no real competition and they're both more than safe. If they want to regain control of the House, and this government, they owe it to the party to campaign for the seats that they can help us win. If MoveOn can campaign on a national level, they can do it for their home state...:-(

4. The ad is on her webiste too
been there for over a week. I posted it on DU and no one paid attention to it at all. It's a great ad, I love the black and white it's an attention getter, different and will be watched. I haven't seen it on tv but I guess I have to turn it on first!

On her website there is also a new pdf. Go to issues in the left sidebar, it's near the top, can be downloaded and handed out while canvassing. It makes the differences very clear.

10. Thanks so much for the info!
I bookmarked her website, but haven't visited it recently. And I agree with you that this is a different kind of political ad, not attack nor self-serving, but just very fresh and innovative. I'm hoping that it gets a lot of attention.:-)

And I'm so sorry that I missed your post. I did do a search before I posted this... Maybe we're not close enough to the election to gain much attention yet...

Thanks so much for all that you're doing regarding this. nuxvomica told me about the GF MoveOn office, so I'm hoping that we cross paths during the campaign. :D

12. I also liked the latest story on her website:
Press Republican: Sweeney makes most-corrupt list

Sweeney makes most-corrupt list
Awarded spot on most-corrupt list
By: NED P. RAUCH
Staff Writer
September 22, 2006

LAKE PLACID - A Washington-based governmental watchdog group has included Rep. John Sweeney in its list of the 20 most corrupt members of Congress.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington scolded Sweeney (R-Clifton Park) for his role in the Congressional Winter Challenge, for hiring his wife to raise money for his campaign and as being too cozy with a trade group representing the boat-building industry.

The organization also suggested Sweeney's son was given preferential treatment after he was charged with assault following a brawl.

I was aware of this, but the fact that this report came out right now certainly helps!:bounce:
