How many people here pay attention to screen names?
I never do as for me the argument is about principles not personalities. I don't really care who you are, your argument either makes sense or it doesn't. So it is very possible I can rag on someone on one thread and be agreeing with them completely on another. So if I do call you out today don't think I will do so tomorrow because I will never know unless you reference the argument. I remember arguments not screen names.

Do others here at DU do the same thing when reading posts?

1. I try to, unless there are personal attacks involved
I remember people who have been nasty with me. I also remember people who express particularly odious points of view - I've correctly ID'd more than one troll because I noticed a pattern of suspicious posts across several threads. But if I disagree with someone on one issue and then like their posts on another issue, I'm not going to be petty about it. Most DUers are nice people. It's the handful of disruptors you have to look out for.

8. I notice the ones I like to read the most
and if there are attacks, I just put them on ignore. I've only ignored 3 people in my 5 years here and may two of them rest in peace.

I hit "alert" rarely. This board has the best folks on the net.

I had three on ignore. All of them are now RIP cases. I'm glad it wasn't "just me".

2. there are some individuals who are memorable
whether if for their intelligence, wit or obnoxiousness. So yes, I do remember screen names after a while. It's one of the useful tools in my decision whether or not to bother with a post.

4. I do, but usually newbies ...
I look for something like 'h8dems' or something then see if they created a profile. Amazing how many trolls will fill info in like links to RW sites or hobbies: "shooting liberals".

How does that work exactly--and why would you do it?

14. I'm going to ignore that.
Seriously, there is a button somewhere on the message that you can select to ignore future post from someone. I have never used it so I am not positive where it is but that's what it's for.

And welcome to DU. :toast:

16. I did it once because someone had an awful picture in their sig line.
It was of bloody or dead children. I couldn't look at it, so I put them on ignore, which just about drove me crazy. I would see these threads with (ignored) instead of their responses, so the whole thread wouldn't make much sense. Thank goodness they changed their sig.

18. it's the little gray bust near the top of this message with the
red X on it. Click it and the person who wrote the message goes on your "ignore" list. Some people have lots of people on ignore, some people have none. It's a matter of personal choice. It can be handy if there's someone who absolutely makes your blood boil or is a complete waste of time -- you won't see their posts, just "Ignored" instead of their handle. I don't think you can receive personal messages (PM) from them, either. I haven't used it much so I'm not sure.

22. All you have to do
is click this little button on the upper line left side of a person's post. After you do that, they will be on your ignore list, and you will not see their posts. This is very helpful if you find a particular poster to be very annoying, or find yourself unable to stay out of flame wars with them.

You can always go into "Options" and unignore them. I find the feature to be very helpful, as there are a handful of posters who just rub me the wrong way.:hi:

29. you use it
when someone is SO obnoxious that it works your last nerve! if it's a questionable newbie, i'll put them on ignore. many times i will later check and they've been tombstoned, so i was right. it's obviously there for a reason...

in the past i've had a LONG ignore list, but every so often i'll clean it out and start all over (just did that last month). it's now growing again. i just don't have the tolerance for much BS anymore, but your mileage may vary. :eyes:

Sometimes if I recognize a style of writing, I'll look at the name..but mostly I'm paying attention to the subject of the post.

Which is funny because I do not intentionally do so, it is just how I read ideas. I guess. But even when I do look at a name I seem to forget it in about 5 minutes.

20. I first look at the thread header topic and, if it interests me, I
click on it to read the OP and responses. I may, go back and look at who posted the OP or a particular response depending on what they contain, but who posts is secondary, to me anyway, to the issue.

27. I'm aware of screen names
Helps me with the subtlety of an argument. If you know things the person believes, it's easier to put their comments in context, even if they don't express themselves well in one contentious issue.

30. I notice them...
There are certain members whose posts I always like to read, and I keep an eye out for those members. Some members I remember their screen names because they've got cool graphics or pics in their sig lines. There are some I often agree with that I'll notice their posts as I come across them; and just as many that I agree with on one thread, and disagree on another.

When someone is consistently rude or nasty, or flame-baiting I learn their name too, I've never used ignore on anyone but I'll skim over their posts in a thread. I don't think some of them realize how obvious they are!

For me it's easy, I have a really good memory for names and it provides me with a kind of "rating" tag. Some people post nothing but dreck here, they're just filling empty space with letters. Others actually have something to say.
