Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 12:04 PM by elehhhhna

WASHINGTON (Reuters)22 Sep 2006 14:55:11 GMT -
President Bush said Friday he knew of no U.S. threat to bomb Pakistan following the Sept. 11 attacks.

"The first I've heard of this is when I read it in the newspaper today," Bush said as he stood next to Musharraf at a news conference. "I guess I was taken aback by the harshness of the words."

OOPS, ya Moron, Pervy made his accusations on 60 Minutes to be aired Sunday night. They hit the papers Thursday.

This story FIRST hit the papers in Sept of 2001:

Bush finalises battle plan

AMERICA was last night assembling the biggest military strike force since the Gulf War as President Bush issued an ultimatum to Pakistan to back allied action or run the risk of being bombed.

Dear George W. Bush:

SNAP! You lying, traitorous, "cartwheeling purveyor of death"!
See you at the Hague.
I'll be the tall one in the crowd.
You'll be the one in chains.

Respectfully,

19. Thanks for the addresses. Here's my email to KO
Before I send it, any comments?

Dear Mr. Olbermann,

Please take a moment to read these two articles regarding Bush's statement from today, 9/22/06, and one that was reported on 9/16/01.

Once again, Mr. Bush attempts to distance himself from factual documentation of his previous remarks. His handlers continue to work furiously, and perhaps in vain, to further abuse the media and its audience by putting out this current spin in the hopes it appears as US foreign diplomacy, albeit, a foreign diplomacy that has no real merit due to the fact that it can be "un-spun" by docmentation.

Too bad the White House cannot scrub each and every article from the Internet that conflicts with the most recent image it wishes to portray to American citizens and the world at large. I say, "Too bad, Mr. President. There are no "do-overs".

Thanks you for your time and attention to this email.

Bush says knew of no threat to bomb Pakistan
22 Sep 2006 14:55:11 GMT
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush said Friday he knew of no U.S. threat to bomb Pakistan following the Sept. 11 attacks.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said this week a U.S. official warned his country in 2001 that America would bomb Pakistan "back to the Stone Age" if it did not cooperate with the campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

"The first I've heard of this is when I read it in the newspaper today," Bush said as he stood next to Musharraf at a news conference. "I guess I was taken aback by the harshness of the words."

(Filed: 16/09/2001)

AMERICA was last night assembling the biggest military strike force since the Gulf War as President Bush issued an ultimatum to Pakistan to back allied action or run the risk of being bombed.

<snip>

If Pakistan failed to comply, US officials warned that the country ran the risk of being bombed in any future military action taken against Islamic terrorists. "We have been left with no doubt," said a senior Pakistan official.

"We can no longer be a friend of bin Laden and the US. And if we don't opt for Washington then they will not only cut off economic funding, including that from the International Monetary Fund, but also see us as a potential target."

17. Sorry, but 60 Minutes hasn't aired this segment yet.
In fact, it's entirely plausible that Bush didn't hear about it until this morning - 60 Minutes' own news release is dated yesterday.

P.M.'s accusations hit Reuters (and DU) yesterday. http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=newsOne&storyID=2006-09-21T182139Z_01_N21359284_RTRUKOC_0_US-PAKISTAN-USA-MUSHARRAF.xml&WTmodLoc=Home-C2-TopNews-newsOne-3

Then there's the little matter of the story from SEPTEMBER 2001 in the OP.

'Splain That. Check out my post 24 & 'splain that, too.

Thank you. The OP's been corrected.

I'm a stickler for getting the story straight - now you're good. As you've pointed out, the 2001 Telegraph article is what's really important - corroborates Musharraf's interview with 60 Minutes, and shows Bush is lying when he claims no prior knowledge.

30. Yes, we need to cut him a break.
Several gallons of Jim Beam later, we can hardly expect a man who can't identify Pakistan on a map to remember what one of his unsupervised von Ribbentrops said way back then.

Mr. "No plans on my desk to invade Iraq" is above such petty concerns.

September 11-16, 2001: Pakistan Threatened; Promises to Support US

ISI Director Lt. Gen. Mahmood Ahmed, extending his Washington visit because of the 9/11 attacks , meets with US officials and negotiates Pakistan’s cooperation with the US against al-Qaeda. It is rumored that later in the day of 9/11 and again the next day, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage visits Mahmood and offers him the choice: “Help us and breathe in the 21st century along with the international community or be prepared to live in the Stone Age.”

Secretary of State Powell presents Mahmood seven demands as an ultimatum and Pakistan supposedly agrees to all seven. Mahmood also has meetings with Senator Joseph Biden (D), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Secretary of State Powell, regarding Pakistan’s position.

On September 13, the airport in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, is shut down for the day. A government official later says the airport had been closed because of threats made against Pakistan’s “strategic assets,” but does not elaborate. The next day, Pakistan declares “unstinting” support for the US, and the airport is reopened. It is later suggested that Israel and India threatened to attack Pakistan and take control of its nuclear weapons if Pakistan did not side with the US. It is later reported that Mahmood’s presence in Washington was a lucky blessing; one Western diplomat saying it “must have helped in a crisis situation when the US was clearly very, very angry.”
