Screw Chavez- Senator Mccbuckled (The Maverick) what a joke.
On the key issue of detainee treatment that had caused the confrontation between the White House and the dissident Republicans, the two sides agreed on a list of specified crimes that would provoke prosecution of CIA interrogators and others.

They also agreed that past violations of an international treaty barring degrading and humiliating treatment of detainees would not result in criminal or civil legal action. (the purpose of the legislation)

The president has the authority to interpret "the meaning and application" of the Geneva Conventions.

1. So in otherwords.......the assholes win AGAIN!
Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 03:07 AM by FrenchieCat
Well, while we stay distrated with a bunch of words uttered, Bush continues with his masterplan. Guess he doesn't get distracted easily. That boy knows what he wants, and he sure is getting it. That's really tragic-------for us. :(

We have got to win something meaningfull in November. This is really too much!

3. Engineered by Republicans......playing good cop/bad cop!
erased our good laws with the stroke of a pen and some bad theater! Oh, how I loath politicians....and in particular those starring in this epic drama of absolutely no porportion!

7. So, in other words.... (a) The Geneva Conventions, and...
(b) The Constitution of the United States... are mere 'after-the-fact' nuisances as far as the U.S. Government (all three branches) is concerned. The only effect of those documents and agreements is to cause our leaders to play-act and go through the motions to pretend they give a damn what's in them.

One wonders when they'll stop bothering to pretend (drop the pretenses).

5. I almost didn't click on the thread because Chavez was in the title.
It's a shame that some can become so distracted over nothing and let something like the torture deal go practically unnoticed.

9. And yet the "liberal" media trumpeted a "compromise"
How are they (corpomedia) just ratings-driven dupes on THIS one? Huh?

They are complicit, they are just FINE with torture, thankyouverymuch. Contact your congresscritters, (sigh) AGAIN.

We cannot afford to let up the pressure on this. There is too much at stake.

11. Let's Force A Vote
Repugnicans are good with poison pills...it'd be nice if Democrats could do the same thing. Let's put a bill that makes waterboarding a national sport...make it like baseball...give it a special exemption and then force a vote on the issue. Lets get every Repugnican on record who favors the use of torture to come out and say so. Let them be forced to explain why our morals have dropped so low. It's a beat your wife issue if Democrats had the guts to roll the dice, like the GOOP did with sham Minimum Wage bill that had the built-in tax cut.

This smells like a sell-out of the highest order. boooosh is facing a revolt in his military and intelligence community due to this issue...and the liabilities involved with it. They saw what happened to Liddie England and those with blood and torture on their hands don't want to face a similar fate. There's a strong chance that we'll learn about the torture of many of the Gitmo prisoners when the IRC gets to interview them and there's a ton of questions about not just the tactics but the overall justification of these detentions. There's sure to be future litigation...either in our own court or in an international one. We have no clue of the scope of these abuses and won't until this misadventure is done. It'll be decades to sort all this crap out...and that's what this "sham" was all about.

The military has about had it with booosh and Rummy. This invasion and the abuse of the troops have started to affect morale...and this "uprising" was an attempt to cut off any real dissent before it got both out of hand and too close to the election.

In essence McCain...the annointed "mouthpiece" of the military has decided to trade future immunity for allowing the continuing of torture and illegal detentions. The only deal he was trying to cut was to play cover for those culpable of crimes (including those in this regime) and putting up a dog and pony show with his buddy Goober Graham that turned out pretty much as I had thought.

Now its time for Democrats to call all these hypocrites on their bullshit. A majority not only don't condone torture in this country, the abhor it. It's breaking the law and the ominous consequences of this abuse of power has to be highlighted.

This was all staged and now the corporate media is showering McCain as some great "compromiser" (just like that sham "Gang Of 14") and gives cover to this regime for past, present and future crimes.

12. This is too fucked up for words
I can't believe America is condoning torture. I can't believe America is letting torturers off the hook for their torturing. How can you not help but compare these creeps to Nazi's. It boggles the mind, really.
