John Kerry says he will filibuster!

Just heard from his staffer!

Edit:

"I thanked the staffer for Kerry saying he was going to vote against Alito. Then I asked, "But instead of just voting against him, is the senator going to Filibuster?"

The answer I got was, "Yes, he is."

There's always a chance that there was a misunderstanding of somekind, but I thought I was being pretty clear."

it's someone else's turn in 2008.
but keep up the good work- for a change.

There's plenty of ways to do so. If you knew what was going on you'd know that Kerry still has a court order in Ohio for August of this year.

You may be right, somebody in an office may have heard something but didn't know it wasn't supposed to go out yet. And I'm just pulling that right out of my ass because I don't know that at all. But for now, there doesn't appear to be anything official, and maybe never will be.

Hey Sandy—

Yes, Kerry would vote no on cloture (i.e. support a filibuster) – so that’s correct.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks!

Amy

35. That isn't the way a filibuster works
Voting is how a filibuster is done. They're working to get the votes, Kerry is the first one to say he'll support a filibuster. Perhaps you just don't know how the Senate works, I don't know.

31. I think it's a joint effort
I don't think anybody is particularly leading on this. Rather it is something that is evolving, Durbin's office is doing the vote counting and seeing where all the Senators are at on the issue.

His chances in 08 to at least get the nomination goes up, way up.

Again, if this is true. I have not read about this anyplace else, except to read the many Sen's who say they will vote against Scalito

38. I just sent him this thank you:
Dear Senator John Kerry,

Thank you for standing up to Bush on the Alito nomination. also, thanks for your decision to vote against cloture of the debate. I think that this debate period will be instructive for Americans.
If the Republicans choose to "nuke" the filibuster, I hope that all of you will stand up and " methodically follow the rules" until the Republicans see that no business will be conducted until the traditional rules are reestablished.
When they scream that the Dems are shutting tthe govt down, You need to fight back and say that They broke the rules and that you are just following them.
If they then keep changing the rules, tell the public that it is a brazen power grab and that you will fight any power grab by a president who only has 36% support.
Bush no longer represents the majority. You do. Please go to the mat for "we the people"!

Sincerely

42. I think Kennedy should actually be the one to
lead the filibuster. Think about it. He's 74 years old, gets re-elected without much problem, he's been there since '62 and is considered the most dreaded liberal of them all. He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't where the right wingers are concerned. He has nothing at all to lose. Let him get out in front and lead it.

47. If you get through tomorrow. . .
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 12:43 AM by pat_k
. . . we can confirm by asking:
"Is Senator Kerry committed to voting AGAINST ending debate (against Cloture)? That is, will the Senator join others to block the nomination from going to a vote on the floor?"

If Yes:
"Has the Senator issued a press release or publicly announced his committment to a Filibuster of Alito's nomination? If he hasn't, when can we expect it?"

If there is any equivocation on voting against cloture / commitment to Filibuster, read them the riot act!!

Three Options: FILIBUSTER, Vote Yes, OR Get Out !!
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2386948

...It's simple, they have three options:
  1. Filibuster;
  2. Vote Yes to Confirm; or
  3. Get Out!
Any Senator who Opposes the Filibuster, Supports Alito's Nomination.

Either publicly throw your support behind the Filibuster OR Vote Yes.

Hypocrites who make a useles and phony display of Voting NO after refusing to support the Filibuster are exactly the kind of weasels we no longer need.
