13. Grandfather's pain "had a profound effect" alright

From a Jewish point of view, I would think his upbringing would be viewed as another tragic consequence of centuries of hatred toward the Jews. That his mother would turn from her heritage and pass for a gentile suggests a deep rooted fear of being identified as a Jew or possibly even self-hatred which she has undoubtedly passed on to her son. She spent her life trying to pass and that suggests shame rather than any sense of pride. Isn't it true that Jews who convert to Christianity still consider themselves to be Jews in a cultural sense? That they still take pride in their heritage as Jews?

I am not willing to judge Allen's mother's choices, but as a person of mixed race, I am particularly sensitive to the fact that she tried to erase the ":pain" of her past from her life and the lives of her children.

I think if I were Allen, I would have skipped the ham crack. He does not know enough about his roots to make light of the history and tradition his mother turned her back on. He ought to reflect on that history and throw out the Confederate flag and the noose.

16. Hey, I know Jews who make a practice of eating port in Yom Kippur.

Some of my husband's Jewish relatives have been known to belly up to the shrimp bar on Passover.

They make a point of not following the Jewish dietary rules but anyone who says they aren't Jewish are in for a fight.

Allen on the other hand acted as if being Jewish was something to be ashamed of.

I suspect they're trying to "Mary Cheney" him. I hope Webb has the guts to call them on it.
