the she Cheney scares a roomful of kids

Lynne Cheney tells little kids everything's OK even though bad guys want to fly planes into their buildings and kill them

God, these White House people have " The Fear Factor" amped up so high they just don't know how to shut it off -- even when they're talking to a room full of little children.

Take Lynne Cheney, for example.

The Vice President's wife made a road trip to Louisville, Ky., to speak to school children on the occasion of National Constitution Day. (Note: Photo is from an earlier Cheney visit to Quantico) For one second, we'll try not to dwell on the irony there, given all that her husband has done in the last six years seeking to undermine the Constitution.

And in fact, freed up from having to answer nasty questions about renditions, unwarranted eavesdropping or the writ of habeas corpus, Lynne Cheney was able to mouth the predictable platitudes about "the people, not the government" being in charge.

But then, speaking to a room full of fifth-graders, she added, out of the blue:

She quoted "America the Beautiful" in the opening of her book - "O beautiful for patriot dream, That sees beyond the years, Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears!"

"It's still true," Cheney said. "Even though they hurt the towers, our alabaster cities do gleam."

My worst memory of that day, as a parent, was when I realized that we would have to tell our own children -- who were just 8 and 6 -- what had happened, that a city that they had visited a number of times for fun had been violently attacked and that many people had died. That someone would wave the bloody shirt of 9/11 at these grade-schoolers for no reason -- other than their ceaseless efforts to scare people -- boggles my mind.

why anyone would want to invite the she Cheney to talk to kids about the Constitution or anything else, is beyond me. who did the inviting?
