that the RNC was pursuing actively since before the 2000 election, and why did the DNC not set course to COUNTER these tactics they learned about during the civil rights commission's election hearings?

The NYT editorial today says vote suppression is the cornerstone of the GOP strategy - but we knew that in 2001. Vote suppression, purged voter rolls, challenges, and after 2002, they must have heard about rigged voting machines and some one must have said, Ignore the issue.

Is there an inside scoop or back story to why the GOP was allowed to get away with INCREASING their vote suppression efforts throughout the 4years Terry McAuliffe was in charge?

From DU thread by DeepModemMom:

NYT editorial: Cornerstone of GOP election strategy is voter suppression

Editorial
Keep Away the Vote
Published: September 21, 2006

One of the cornerstones of the Republican Party’s strategy for winning elections these days is voter suppression, intentionally putting up barriers between eligible voters and the ballot box. The House of Representatives took a shameful step in this direction yesterday, voting largely along party lines for onerous new voter ID requirements. Laws of this kind are unconstitutional, as an array of courts have already held, and profoundly undemocratic. The Senate should not go along with this cynical, un-American electoral strategy.

1. Republicans have been suppressing our legislation also.
Over 3 years ago, I was on a voting machine task force in Florida. After a years worth of research, we tured our findings over to Senator Bob Graham.

He introduced legislation to require a paper trail of every vote, but the repukes bottled it up in committee, and it died.

2. This is exactly the type of election infrastructure battle the DNCs set up
for - so why didn't we see any positive action to counter the RNC all those years when it was SUPPOSED to be engaged in protecting our votes?

3. Solid question.... Why have they not been fighting
these tactics... These tactics are the most flagrant evidence of them stealing the elections... NOT THE VOTING MACHINES!!!

The fucking Dems are doing nothing about it !

4. Dean started to work on it for real - after THREE stolen elections were
allowed to go down with NO correction or counteractions by the DNC for 2002 and 2004 elections.

A LIHOP by Terry McAuliffe?

votes with TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code, and virtually no audit/recount controls, and having these extremely insecure and insider hackable voting systems fast-tracked all over the country with a $3 billion-plus federal boondoggle and unregulated lavish lobbying, entitles you to do anything you damn please to black, brown, poor, elderly, student and other Democratic voters. Who can stop you? Smashing the poor is a perk of getting Diebolded into office.

The 5% to 10% "thumb on the scales" for Bushites, warmongers and corporatists, that these Bushite corporations can now EASILY and WITHOUT DETECTION place on our elections, is the foundation of their power. Suppressing poor voters is just extra--and also probably a hedge against the American peoples' discovery of their electronic voting scam.

And the question about the DNC is, why wasn't Terry McAuliffe SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER about BUSHITE CORPORATIONS--Diebold, whose CEO was a Bush-Cheney campaign chair and major fundraiser, and its brethren corporation, ES&S, a spinoff of Diebold, initially funded by rightwing billionaire Howard Ahmanson (who also gave one million dollars to the extremist 'christian' Chalcedon Foundation, which touts the death penalty for homosexuals, among other things)--gaining control of EIGHTY-PERCENT of the nation's vote prior to the 2004 election, with TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code?!

Question 2: Given this OUTRAGEOUS coup by Bushite electronic voting companies, why did the DNC put an "Iron Curtain" over all talk of election fraud after the 2004 election?

Question 3: Why is the DNC still shilling for these corporations, by saying it's the touchscreens that are the problem, and optiscans are okay--when optiscans and the central tabulators are ALSO run on TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code, owned and controlled by Bushite corporations? Paper ballots are hardly worth the paper they are printed on, if the ballot goes into a box and is never seen again, and your "vote" becomes a bunch of electrons in an extremely riggable electronic system! Is it the money? The big electronics contracts in government? Fear? Fear of the Bushites and another anthrax attack*? Fear of overly powerful, corrupt election officials? Fear of being "swift-boated" like Kevin Shelley (Calif Sec of State) if you oppose Diebold? What?

The Democratic leaders' failure on the matter of Bushite-controlled electronic voting is MIND-BOGGLING.

Not to mention their failure on vote suppression (which could readily be tackled under EXISTING law).

----------------------------

*(It was the Anthrax Congress that passed the infamous "Help America Vote Act" (HAVA) of 2002--engineered by the biggest crooks in Congress, Tom Delay and Bob Ney (now indicted or resigned in bribery scandals), and abetted by Corporate 'Democrats' like Christopher Dodd and Terry McAuliffe. ALL BUT TWO of our US Democratic Senators voted FOR this piece crap legislation--the exceptions being (surprise, surprise!) Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer (maybe because of NYers' attachment to their old, reliable, unriggable lever machines). Say they were scared, or ignorant. Fine. Okay. Could be true. But what accounts for their silence NOW? Hm? This is OUTRAGEOUS--Bushite corporations gaining SECRET control over vote tabulation. It's a NO-BRAINER. It's PATENTLY ABSURD. It's totally MIND-BLOWING. It's a GODDAMNED FASCIST COUP! HOW could they be SILENT about this?! Are they IN on it, or what?)

----------------------------

THROW DIEBOLD, ES&S AND ALL ELECTION THEFT MACHINES INTO 'BOSTON HARBOR' NOW! BUST THE MACHINES--VOTE BY ABSENTEE BALLOT THIS NOVEMBER!

If everyone who despises the Bush Junta (60% to 70%!) votes by Absentee Ballot, the reign of these diabolical machines is OVER!

6. Terry McAuliffe - LIHOP?
There just doesn't seem to be any real answer why voter integrity dept. chose to NOT LIFT A FINGER for four years.
