UN expert: May be more torture in Iraq now than under Saddam
http://www.wane.com/Global/story.asp?S=5439375&nav=0RYb

GENEVA The U-N's chief anti-torture campaigner says the torture situation in Iraq may be worse now than when Saddam Hussein was in charge.

The assessment comes from an Austrian law professor who serves the U-N. He says most people in the know would say torture is "totally out of hand."

And there's plenty of blame to go around. He accuses not only terrorist groups and militias of torturing people, but also the Iraqi military and police. Iraqi detention centers are among the places where there are what he calls "very serious allegations of torture."

1. this is wrong on so many levels
I can't stand it! I want to vomit, scream and explode out of my skin, all at the same time. This whole picture is so insane that it won't fit in to my brain. We are supposed to be the leader of the free world, a shining example of liberty and justice. I'm really freaked-out especially about the prisons. We have gone from bad to worse...letting the inmates run the asylum. We put Iraqi's in charge of other Iraqis, in the prison systems, whom are age-old enemies. They can beat, starve, mutilate, and kill each other with impunity. After all the abuses by American prison guards, the Iraqi's begged not to be left behind, to be kept by other Iraqis. We supposedly went in there to rescue these people and release them from harsh sanctions, which kept food and medicine out of the hands of the poor down-trodden citizens. Now, look what's happened a country-wide torture-pit inside the prisons and out. My God, the number of blind-folded carcasses they find every day keeps the morgue filled to over flowing. Bush will rot in hell!
