Third preemie dies in Indianapolis
The third infant died yesterday--Thursday Dawn Jeffers. There are still 3 more babies in intensive care due to this error. How incredibly sad. Caused by human error.
These machines that dispense the drugs are dangerous. A couple of months ago our Lortab elixir was stocked with Tylenol with Codiene. Humans fill these machines. They are very fallible. Hard lesson learned but I definitely know what JCAHO is going after next year.

D'myia Sabrina Nelson and another premature baby girl, Emmery Miller, died Saturday after they received an adult dose of a blood thinner at Methodist Hospital.

Four other babies also were affected. Three were in stable condition Monday at Methodist, while the fourth was in critical condition at Riley Hospital for Children.

Hospital officials said that the overdoses were the result of human and procedural error and that their hearts go out to the families, but Nelson said that doesn't ease her pain.

1. Ohhhhh.. this is so sad, and exactly why I decided not to go into nursing.
I was just too scared I would make a mistake that would cost someone his or her life.

2. If you keep the reverence that every drug you give
can kill someone, you would do fine.
There is never a time that I don't think about that before giving medication. Ever.

3. I'd hope the hospitals
would be willing to make a major settlement sooner rather than later, after years of litigation and delay.

4. In that paper article that I read
it stated that they would.
I don't have a link as I am typing from an actual newspaper:
"The hospital will offer to pay for family counseling and provide restitution to all six families affected", said Sam Odle, CEO of Methodist Hospital.
