6,599 Iraqis have died violently in the last two months
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 11:08 AM by Lone_Star_Dem
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The United Nations, citing evidence of severe torture, said Iraq had become deadlier than ever, as local Iraqi forces took charge of a southern province from departing Italian soldiers on Thursday.

A U.N. report released overnight said 6,599 Iraqis had died violently in the last two months, 700 more than the previous two, making the period the deadliest yet. Many were tortured and killed by death squads because of their religion, it said.

"Bodies found at the Medico-legal Institute often bear signs of severe torture including acid-induced injuries and burns caused by chemical substances, missing skin, broken bones, missing eyes, missing teeth and wounds caused by power drills or nails," the report said.

July was deadlier than August, which Washington say shows a security crackdown in the capital Baghdad is working. But violence has already escalated again in September, with a surge in death squad killings in the capital and a relentless series of bomb attacks in the north and west in recent days.

The latest, a massive car bomb strike on a tribal leader in Samarra, killed 10 and wounded 39 on Wednesday, according to police. On Thursday, gunmen in four cars attacked a police station in western Baghdad, killing six.

It's worth notice how the previous two months there were 5899 deaths.

The grand total for the four month period is 12,498 people dead by violence. That's more than 102 people per day.

Feeling the outrage yet?

Mission accomplished!

2. If 6599 Americans died violently in last 2 mos - what Would We Think?
Would we be able to cope? Would we be happy if a foreign force were occupying our land which was sparking the killing? Would we want the occupying force to go home to stop the killing?

It really is not that hard to understand the Iraqi mindset when you reverse roles with them.

There's around 29 million people in all of Iraq and around 299 million in the US.

Edit for Freudian slip

Typed Iran and not Iraq.

3. But they were worse off under
Hussein.

At least that's what we're supposed to continue to believe.

This is another thing that Democrats should be shouting from the rooftops, the incredible numbers of Iraqis dying daily, weekly, and monthly under our occupation.

7. That fact is too much to bear!
It's utterly sickening. We are all to blame, until we find it in ourselves to take to the streets in outright revolt against this despotic, Constitution-hating, lawless government we find ourselves under.

Poll: Iraq war could wound GOP at polls
(CNN) -- President Bush's unpopularity -- due largely to the war in Iraq -- seems likely to affect GOP candidates in congressional midterm elections in November, according to a CNN poll released Wednesday.

Fifty-five percent of 1,004 Americans said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who has supported Bush administration policies, according to the poll conducted by Opinion Research Corporation on behalf of CNN. Forty percent said they would be more likely.

Asked a similar question in 1994 regarding President Clinton, 51 percent of Americans said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who had supported the Democratic administration.

The war in Iraq appears to be a main factor in Republican opposition, poll results show. Fifty-eight percent of poll respondents said they are opposed to the war, compared with 39 percent who approve of it. (Watch why Republicans are on the ropes -- 2:47)
