1. The Republicans want voters to show a picture ID before
being allowed to vote. Like a drivers license or some such crap. Ridiculous!

5. No - it would require a photo ID and proof of citizenship
like a passport. I just purchased my children passports for a trip 5 months ago. It took 4.5 hours and $200 to get them.

2. Photo ID by November 2008...
Proof of citizenship photo ID by 2010. The pubs *promise* they will pay the states back for costs incurred supplying IDs to those who cannot afford them... The League of Women Voters estimates 7 million folks will need help obtaining these IDs to the tune of several hundred million $ ( can't remember the exact figure) In Other Words: An unconstitutional, unfunded mandate. :grr:

How's that? :)

3. Here's a news article
I didn't know it came from President Carter's recommendations.

House bill to require voter ID

The House yesterday passed legislation that would require voters to show a valid photo identification in federal elections over the overwhelming objections of Democrats who compared the bill to segregation-era measures aimed at disenfranchising Southern blacks.
The Federal Election Integrity Act was approved on a nearly party-line 228-196 vote. Republicans backed the bill 224-3, with three nonvoters; Democrats opposed it 192-4, with five nonvoters. They were joined in opposition by the House's one independent member.

4. The repigs want to require photo ID or birth cert., not
taking into consideration people who might have lost everything (Katrina), people who don't drive, people who may have been born at home and have no b.c., people without resources to get a photo ID, etc. The repigs are trying to narrow down the people who can vote, and that would be primarily poorer people. Lots of impassioned speeches on the floor of the House yesterday, from Dems.
One rep. said he went to DMV and showed his House pic. ID. It wasn't sufficent for him to get a license.
That was Congressman Ike Skelton (D-MO).

Here's a thread from yesterday:

8. I want to know how this will affect mail-in voting...
our county does it all by mail on paper ballots...does that mean that only those new voters trying to register will be asked for ID or will we all have to re-register to present our "proofs"?
