Who Was Offended With The Chavez Remarks About Bush?
calling him the devil

saying he could still smell the sulfur

i was very amused with it.

sure, it got him a cheep round of applause (i guess)

sure, he's been no angel (apparently)

but to say this to the world?? to say something we have said in the privacy of our household about fuck head? i was very amused. (i think i did one of those: OMG! Ha! things)

what was your gut reaction?

28. The neutrality of this article is disputed.
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 12:55 AM by BrotherBuzz
A Wikipedian has expressed the opinion that this article is unbalanced.

But what the heck, let's beat the dead horse a bit more. :)

Hugo Chávez is a passionately disputed personality. Supporters view him as a socialist liberator, hailing him for promoting Latin American integration, fighting imperialism and neoliberalism, empowering Venezuela's poor and indigenous communities, and reducing poverty and unemployment. Meanwhile, his opponents see him as an authoritarian militarist and demagogue who has failed to deliver on his promises, violated fundamental rights, meddled in the affairs of other Latin American countries, threatened Venezuela's economy and democracy, and destabilized global oil prices.

There, that's a balanced statement. My opinion of Hugo Chávez lies somewhere between these two extremes. He ain't no Choir boy, and he's certainly not the son of Satan, either.

Domestically, Chávez has launched Bolivarian Missions, whose goals are to combat disease, illiteracy, malnutrition, poverty, and other social ills.

Jeez, what a horrible guy! Imagine someone who wants to combat disease, illiteracy, malnutrition, poverty and other ills. He must be condemned for being an angel. Our devil does not approve of those things.

22. it was completely humiliating
Can you imagine Chavez or anyone else making such a joke about Clinton? Would never happen.

The fact that other leaders can make jokes of this nature about bush says everything about how seriously he is taken in the world and how little respect he has.

On television, they showed Chavez speaking and then panned to the U.S.'s empty seat. The imagery was powerful: it said that when it comes to U.S. leadership, the seat is vacant--there's nothing there.

Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 02:36 AM by tenshi816
for his remarks (and I don't know for sure because I didn't see his speech, but I've read that people applauded)? If that's the case, then it piles on even more humiliation.

That empty seat spoke volumes, and what it said wasn't complimentary about American "leadership".

I heard it on TV but also I was reading the rapture ready board because someone here on the why can't freepers spell thread was pointing it out. The fundies were horrified that Chavez was getting the applause he got. But even over there they are sadly observing that the U.S. has no friends.

I find their views on the EU downright comical. A day or so ago, one bright spark over there referred to the European Union as the "military arm" of Europe. WTF???

84. And that distinction is important
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 03:24 PM by Moochy
I am reacting not as a pragmatic democratic strategist, but merely as a person fed up with so much rabid nationalism and defense of Bush, by folks on our side of the aisle.

And I'll readily admit that "Bush is the Devil" aint gonna win Chavez or Democrats much of the moderate fed-up republican-types of voters.

I too am tired of losing elections.

As an individual I can agree with Chavez because I'm not running for office.

Thank you for the reasoned response!
Cheers

PS:did you read or hear the entire speech? not just the sound bites that have been extracted by the sensationalist media?

I had all of 2 people on my ignore list till just a few days ago, both of whom had been tombstoned when I checked earlier today. Now it's around 30. It's funny, all I have to do is check each Chavez post for people saying things which are flagrantly false about him. It's DU's very own online bs detector - if they lie about Chavez, then how can anything else they say be trusted? And the freeps and DLCers are genetically incapable of passing by a Chavez post without saying something stupid, so it's the perfect net.

And that's why I compared him to a 12 year old.

His behavior was inappropriate and childish. Instead of presenting his message in a way that would resonate with adults, which he could have easily done, he chose to discredit himself by acting like a child.

While they are playing up this part, the whores on MSM will not touch the substance of other points raised like: he thinks he owns the world; domination; imperialism; attempted coups, illegal wars; providing bombs to killing Lebanese people while claiming to care about them; imposing neoliberal policies through the IMF and World Bank and bullying the UN.
Until they are prepared to discuss the substance as Rachael Maddow attempted to do inspite of Whora and Ben Ferguson, MSM and Bushco can shut the fugg up.
The reason for that warm applause is that Chavez merely expressed the feelings of billions on this planet and the sad truth is that Bush created this hatred of America.

52. It offends some people's nationalistic sensibilities.
I've been reading this book "King Leopold's Ghost."

http://www.amazon.com/King-Leopold%92s-Ghost-Heroism-Colonial/dp/0618001905/sr=8-1/qid=1158856736/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-5710390-0386322?ie=UTF8&s=books

It's about a holocaust in the Belgian Congo at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Millions of Congolese were slaughtered. Frankly, it makes the Armenian holocaust look well known by comparison.

Anyway, I've also been reading some criticism of the book. Most of which is overwhelmingly favorable. There, however, was this Belgian critic (name escapes me) who was upset that King Leopold was compared with Hitler. The argument being that while King Leopold killed millions of Congolese, he wasn't actually trying to wipe out their race like Hitler. Nevermind the millions killed.

So it seems to me that everytime some country's leader is criticized, there's going to be nationalistic fucks who get upset about it no matter how valid the criticism.

57. did you see or hear what charlie rangel & pelosi said?
"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - One of President George W. Bush's fiercest political opponents at home took his side on Thursday, calling Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez a "thug" for his remark that Bush is like the devil."

"Hugo Chavez fancies himself a modern day Simon Bolivar but all he is an everyday thug," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a news conference, referring to Chavez' comments in a U.N. General Assembly speech on Wednesday.
http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=politicsNews&storyID=2006-09-21T164252Z_01_N21334844_RTRUKOC_0_US-VENEZUELA-USA-SPAT.xml&WTmodLoc=NewsHome-C3-politicsNews-2

i thought: get over it--why don't you talk about WHY he said what he said instead of saying we're the only ones who can critize the asshole and we'll call you a thug if YOU do it

then there is this from rangel's website

http://www.house.gov/apps/list/press/ny15_rangel/CBRStatementChavezUNspeech09212006.html

"CONG. RANGEL CONDEMNS CHAVEZ'S ATTACK ON BUSH
WASHINGTON - I want to express my extreme displeasure with statements by the President of Venezuela attacking U.S. President George Bush in such a personal and disparaging way during his remarks at the United Nations General Assembly.

"It should be clear to all heads of government that criticism of Bush Administration policies, either domestic or foreign, does not entitle them to attack the President personally."

Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 04:19 PM by butlerd
Bush and his "minions" regularly criticize and smear world leaders and fellow countrymen that don't agree with them at every media-covered taxpayer financed speech/address they make. Where's the outrage about THAT? Didn't Rush Limbaugh publicly call Tom Daschle "El Diablo" on his radio show for daring to raise questions about Bush and his so-called "war on terror" back in 2002? Where was the outrage about that? Frankly, I'm not really offended about Chavez's comments. I didn't vote for Bush and I think that he has been the worst thing that could've ever happened to our wonderful country. I feel bad that the rest of the world feels so negatively about us nowadays and I blame Bush and his extraordinarily poor social and diplomatic skills for this. He has squandered (nearly?) all of the worldwide goodwill that Clinton (and then 9/11) left us. I only hope that Chavez and the rest of the world understands that Bush really doesn't represent all of us (or most of us for that matter). Unless Bush and his "minions", which have, frankly, not said very nice things about Chavez really want to start "changing the tone" in terms of how they relate to other world leaders and countrymen who don't agree with them, then they really shouldn't be surprised to find other people saying unkind things about them. I guess Bush must have skipped over the portion of the Bible that talked about the concept of the "golden rule?"

The whole world is in the 6th grade mindset. Everyone needs to take lessons on diplomacy--not just Chavez. Didn't Bush call North Korea's president a "pigmy?"

However, in looking at this from Chavez's perspective: it was politically advantageous. His people--and the world--agree with him. His poll numbers will skyrocket.

Whether I agree with him or not (I think he was overstating, but there was a lot of truth to what he said), the point is, he may now drive a lot of people who were unhappy or waffling with Bush back to his camp--"he may be a schmuck, but he's OUR schmuck." Perversely, it's a little like Clinton's approval ratings boost during and after impeachment.

135. Bush was not elected, he was appointed
at least Chavez was elected. Hey, wasn't Bush an alcoholic, cocaine, AWOL, deserter? He is for torture, cheating the sick, elderly, children, destroying our planet, cheating our troops, ad infinitum, so saith the Pope.

The late Pope told it like it was when he called Bush the Antichrist, Hell, what else could he be?

Chavez to give oil to the poor, etc., Bush would never do that!

136. I was amused.
We know Chavez has had it out for Bush for a long time, so it wasn't much of s surprise.

I think our "heroes" like Pelosi and Rangel should shut the hell up, though. Personally, I would be more than happy to allow these comments to be how the world really does view the chimp in chief.

139. Not offended
just sad. That we have this idiot for our leader and he is suppose to speak for us. He does not speak for me. Until the day I day, I will never own this terror he has brought on the world.

140. I dont think the UN was the right place
The whole point is for all the countries to work together, and that is divisive, but that being said I agree with what Chavez said 100%
