I agree with sex selection screening at fertility clinics
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 08:56 PM by Proud2BAmurkin
As the youngest of 7 I agree with this practice. I heard for all my life the last 4 were "tries for a girl" my mom wanted. That part didn't bother me as much as the fact that 7 was beyond their means by about 3 kids so it meant shitty neighborhoods and shitty schools.

Maybe after the first 2 kids
but not for the first kid and probably not for the second. Things get entirely too lopsided if people are able to sex select all their offspring.

Look at China and India. Millions of women are missing, aborted as girl babies because boys are favored. That means millions of men with no hope of home, family, and stability.

Boys are favored here, too, although not quite as strongly.

2. agree they should want what they get
or not have any but most of the time there is a preference anyway for the second one (third fourth fifth.....)to be what the first one isn't. Someone else said they should allow it but not for the first one. Good idea, although don't see how you could regulate.

3. Then there is the issue
of parents who divorce and remarry - I think you have the children you were destined to have, if you are lucky enough to have any. Just think if you could predetermine the sex, how close would that be to crossing the line to other forms of genetic engineering? A little too God-Like for me.

BTW - my husband is the youngest of six, all boys and Catholic too.

4. You don't agree with the premise, and then you show its accuracy
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 09:29 PM by Rabrrrrrr
at least in one instance, in your first statement.

:wtf:

Clearly, your sister-in-law DID want a specific gender child.

Clearly, you didn't care.

Thus, you neither prove nor disprove the premise that "People want children of a particular gender", which premise was never posited by the OP to begin with.

5. I find both scenarios a little bit creepy.
Either way, it's sort of an exercise in ego for the parents--that having a kid is all about what they want, like the kid is a toy or fashion accessory, rather than rooting for ten fingers and ten toes and that's it.

And I doubt that sex screening is really going to help low-income families--they can't afford it. It's just a way for the more affluent to avoid all that work.
