Poll question: Who will be our YOPP?
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 09:09 PM by waiting for hope
Reading to my son tonight and it struck me how prophetic Dr. Seuss was and I Quote:

And, just as he felt he was getting nowhere,
and almost about to give up in despair,
He suddenly burst through a door and that Mayor
Discovered one shirker! Quite hidden away
In the Fairfax Apartments (Apartment 12-J)
A very small, very small shirker named Jo-Jo
Was standing, just standing, and bouncing a YO-YO!
Not making a sound! Not a yipp! Not a chirp!
And the Mayor rushed inside and he grabbed the young twerp!
And he climbed with the lad up the Eiffelberg Tower.

"This," cried the Mayor, "is your town's darkest hour!
The time for all Whos who have blood that is red
To come to the aid of their country!" he said.
"We've GOT to make noises in greater amounts!
So, open your mouth, lad! For every voice counts!"

Thus spoke as he climbed. When they got the the top,
The lad cleared his throat and he shouted out, "YOPP!"

So, who will be our YOPP?

3. Ok, maybe I'm stupid
But I don't understand the question.

Am I supposed to pretend I'm a "shirker" and name some kind of savior who will take care of protecting my country for me? That's sure not what I want in a presidential candidate, which from your choices it looks like you're asking for.

5. Sorry - I just found the
paragraph where The Mayor was asking for the extra voice as being a rallying cry - I wasn't referring to Presidential Candidates, but the ones listed are, to me, the most visible as being a bit more outspoken. The question was, who is finally going to say or do something (like in line with Keith Olbermann) that will make a difference.

6. Oh, ok. Thanks for the reply
I can choose the one I think is most outspoken, or most effectively and courageously so.

But it's kind of a shame there's not an "e. all of the above" answer. One voice, in the wilderness as it were, is not enough. Everyone you listed is doing what he or she can, and there are many others, but ultimately it will take all of us. I very much fear we're not doing enough.

4. I'll bet I read "Horton Hears a Who" 500 times
over the course of a 32 year elementary school teaching career, as well as almost nightly readings to my sons when they were younger. It was by far their favorite bedtime story.

7. Other: WE ALL NEED TO BE THE YOPP!!!
Sorry for all-caps there, but seriously, why do we keep looking for some charismatic savior?

And it says it right here in your excerpt:

The time for all Whos who have blood that is red
To come to the aid of their country!" he said.
"We've GOT to make noises in greater amounts!
So, open your mouth, lad! For every voice counts!"

Let's heed these wise words!!!

8. I do heed and agree,
however, as the media goes, the most effective measure sometimes is that one voice. Keith Olbermann has been such a polarizing force lately but he is a media personality - this country needs someone in the political arena to be as effective as he has been.

9. I find it is much more effective
to talk to people face-to-face.

Media is overrated. If we want real, lasting change, it has to come from the bottom-up, not the top-down. The people who need to be mobilized aren't going to listen to a politician or a TV personality, no matter how honest that person may actually be.

We have to do the legwork. It is supposedly our nation, our gov't, but it sure doesn't seem that way.

We need to conenct with each other, in real life, without the TV, without the internet, before we can realize how much strength and power we have.

In solidarity,

Megan
