I can't find any mention of the devil in the text of Chavez's speech.

4. I usually agree with KO, but not this time. We have raped South
and Central America for years. It no doubt takes an officially strong opposition stand to get a much needed change for these people. I am not proud of my country. We need to take care of our own ignominies, and we should let other countries alone. The almighty dollar os killing our democracy.

5. typical myopic american arrogance
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 08:19 PM by bigtree
what Chavez said about the leader of our country rang achingly true, no matter what we may think of him.

I'm certain Chavez would align himself with the Iranian president's statement that, in effect, his country hasn't invaded and occupied countries next to America. The arrogance of Americans is astounding in the face of our own military's practice, support of, and fostering of the killing of tens of thousands of innocents under Bush's rule.

We could stand the lecture, no matter that it came from these ulitmately obnoxious, demagouging upstarts. I commend Chavez for speaking truth to Bush's assumed power. I wish our own leaders had the courage of this man who has so much at risk from the reprisals that commonly come from Bush's imperious reign.

13. Ya gotta keep up appearances y'know, politics ending at the waterline
and all that, what? Besides, what difference does it make in US media politics what he says about another country.

I'm a pretty big fan of Chavez, but if a little bashing keeps Kieth on the air, I think it's worth it.

I say, leave the childish namecalling to the Ann Coulters of the world.

The devil? Uh, yeah. The only thing such rhetoric will do is help the Republicans in the upcoming elections, as the Christian Right comes out to support their "Christian" leader against what they likely see as the blasphemous words of Chavez.

"Chavez called Bush the devil? We'll show him! Let's go vote Republican, Lord have mercy!"

16. Chavez's address was more than childish name-calling
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 11:27 PM by bigtree
It's true that strong rhetoric polarizes, but it also clarifies.

I think it's just as pernicious to dismiss his comments as mere name-calling while ignoring the point about Bush's arrogance in relation to countries like Venezuela; especially in light of this administration's attempted assassination of the Venezuelan leader and their attempts to undermine Venezuela's democracy. It's incredibly myopic to cast his comments in such a narrow vein. Everything Chavez expressed was a legitimate response to our country's muckraking in his region, and in everyone else's. Why should we expect anyone with any pride at all come before the world bowing and scraping to their oppressor?

It's that same myopia that would compel us to shy away from embracing and expressing the naked truth about our Bush's lunacy just to keep from "helping republicans."

18. You're right. My post was entirely clouded by the fact that..
..I did not hear anything more of his speech than was reported afterwards in the MSM.

Hence, my ignorance as to what else he said.

The thing is, if he wanted Americans to actually listen to his message, he would've avoided the "devil" stuff. He's a smart man -- he should've known that the American media would pounce on his fiery comments and skip the rest.

19. if he didn't use the Devil line...
there would be so much less curiosity out there to read his entire speech.
Chavez used the msm and they fell for it, imo.

I think he's is a slick one and this worked like he intended.

20. How many people are going to go out and actively look for the text..
..of the speech?

Not many, IMO.

All this will do, because of the MSM coverage, is solidify many American's opinions of Chavez as a loony.

22. people love controversy and bad language...
that's a big hook - that's why Wolfie and all played it like they did.
maybe some otherwise nonreaders of UN speeches thought there'd be even juicier soap operish language in the text but got drawn in to some valuable re-edumacation instead.

imo, there were more reading Chavez speech than Bushes, because of this BFEE debil business.

23. a lot of people are out actively buying Chomsky's
book that Chavez recommended.

would think at least that much would have read his entire speech. Now whether that number is unusally high compared to other Devil-less speeches Hugo has made, I'm not sure.

Everything Chavez said after that line was incredibly powerful.
