37% Bush Approval - Times/CBS News poll
Mr. Bush’s job approval rating was 37 percent, virtually unchanged from the last Times/CBS News poll, which was conducted in August. On the issue that has been a bulwark for Mr. Bush, 54 percent said they approve of the way he is managing the effort to combat terrorists, again unchanged from last month, though up from earlier this spring.

1. Mr. Bush's presidency cannot be said to be humming along if his
approval rate is consistently below 40%.

I lament the damage he has done to our democracy and to our relations with our allies.

And I believe voters will hold him accountable in November by electing many more Democrats to the Congress.

And if we get that majority back, there's some restoration work to be done.

2. This is a little more comforting-
the only poll you hear referenced in the MSM lately is the 44% approval Gallup poll.

I thought I remembered something about actual evidence that it had been manipulated, but I must have had it mixed up with another poll--couldn't find anything here or on Google. Darn.

Edited to say:
Oh wait--I knew I saw some explanation for this oddity. It's down in reply #70 of the link above.

7. I've been hearing that 44% one being trumpeted too.
But if in the media they want to shout about the high number, then we can shout about the low ones. Fair is fair.

3. Bush/Repubs Have Picked the Wrong Issue to Hitch Their Wagon to...
...People are onto them when it comes to the War in Iraq/Afghanistan and fighting terrorism.

I have heard people in South Carolina, who are some of the most pro-military folks in the entire country, and they have had enough. Their husbands, sons and daughters are on their 3rd and 4th deployments, and they have told the folks back home how incompetent, dangerous, and virtually hopeless the effort is on the ground over there.

The "swing" has already occurred, and many military families have had enough.

IF Repubs follow this theme through midterm elections, it is going to work against them.

8. It is the 54% that is scary
A whole lot of idiot folks base their votes on this issue.

10. More good news...

"In the poll, 50 percent of voters said they would support a Democrat in the fall Congressional election, compared with 35 percent who said they would support a Republican."

...which is reason to question election results if Dems don't win.
