Oprah threatens to sue fan wanting her to run for president
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/09/20/entertainment/main2025001.shtml

(CBS) Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has threatened to sue a fan who's been spearheading an Oprah for president drive.

The cease-and-desist letter from Oprah's lawyer tells the fan to stop using her name and image on his Oprah for president Web site, The Smoking Gun reports.

Smoking Gun posted a copy of the letter on its Web site. In addition to the Oprah Web site, Patrick Crowe, 69, has also written a self-published book boosting an Oprah White House bid and maintains a toll-free Oprah hotline number.

3. I kinda know him
He taught with my dad - many years ago. And I know one of his neighbors.

I think it's kinda funny. Oprah needs to get over it.

4. I don't know that she has a choice in the matter.
Her name is being used for political, and not commercial, purposes.

I don't think Oprah has a legal leg to stand on. The quote in the article even says "commercial purposes", but the push to put her in political isn't a commercial purpose.

By the way: this is very, VERY telling. A corporation seeing a push to put its Person (I'll just make that a title) into political office as a commercial purpose?

My, my. So that is how her broadcaster sees politics: as a commercial purpose.

There was never a better argument against corporate personhood. Oprah's corporation should lack standing to sue under our laws.
