Poll question: Do you have a passport?
Seen some threads off and on mentioning them (related to voting). I don't have one and never have had one (I am 40). Have not needed one for anything to date and don't plan on it in near future.

So, simple poll - Do you have a passport?

8. I have one but have never used it. After my divorce it was something
I got for myself. It was more a symbol of freedom and change of attitude for me than anything else. There is something nice knowing that I can pick up and go if that weekend in Paris ever pops up. It was an expensive luxury for me at the time but something I needed to do. I hope to use it one day.

39. Expired.
I let mine expire. After 9/11 travel became waaaaaay to much of a hassle, and appears to be getting worse. I will never allow myself the indignity of allowing anyone to strip search me if they feel the need.

2. Nope I sure don't, but here is a fnny story.
When my wife and I were going to Alaska for xmas of 2004, one of my wife's co-workers, asked her when "we" were going to get a passport, because we were going to Alaska...

If you don't understand the above paragraph...I don't know if I can help you...:)

and we have gone through Canada a few times, and I dont' believe we needed passports... But I could be wrong on that, cause I was pretty young during those LONG drives...:) BTW, I am surprised so many people have answered yes to this poll of yours(so far).

IIRC it will be required to re-enter the US in the future (not sure of implementation date off hand).

23. I don't either Petersond, but now you and I
are out of luck as far as going to Canada without a passport. I've only been out of the country once in my life, that was for 5 minutes, I drove over the border into Canada just so I could say I had 'travelled outside the US'-(18yrs ago)!!!

As of yesterday, I heard on the news that Americans aren't allowed to go to Canada or Mexico without a passport. And I live just over an hour from the Canadian border - and that invisible line is lookin sweeter by the day- :dilemma:

38. do you think Canada will
accept me and my kids as refugees from a hostile government?
A woman without a country??

What would happen to us? Do you know?-
(i'm not proud of this, but some of my 'genes' date back to the Mayflower, and include 'patriots' of all wars with the only exception of the Korean War)

All 'good' things must come to an end- maybe this is it.

6. i might be able to help *you* tho
it depends on how the co-worker thought you were traveling to alaska, if you drive, you will unavoidably enter and depart canada, and while a passport may not be strictly required, it sure makes life a lot easier

sometimes when we're thinking how stupid the other guy is, he's thinking the same about us and it's all a huge misunderstanding

31. I have a lot more stories...
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 06:22 PM by petersond
but the main ones...

I worked for a jewlery store in SE Alaska...and we would get about 3-5 cruise ships a day...and I got asked this question, way to often

"Do you accept american money?" This coming from Americans...In all honesty, I have been asked that question at least 100 plus times...

Another classic...

"Do you accept Canadian money?" another great classic....

This proposed plan cuts both ways. It would alienate much of the GOP lower base if a passport was required.

(Former dual national. My mom still is.)

My BF really needs to get one - the way things are going, if he doesn't, he won't be able to visit his parents in Toronto!

One handy thing about dial citizenship is that you can pick the shorter line when going through Customs between US/Canada...

22. Of course.
I have only absolutely needed it once (so far. will for Canadian road trips soon). But I have one and will keep it current. It takes a long time to get and you never know when it would be handy to have.
Even if you don't count posible need for voting or fleeing the country or whatever. Nice ticket price comes along and you wan't to take a quick trip... bummer if you can't. Same for getting invited along on a trip. My sister had to get hers in a massive hurry because she got invited along on a trip with a friend.

I would recomend getting one. Its not going to hurt (well not too much).

26. Every member of my family has one -
- we got them about 3 years ago when headed to Canada on vacation. Though not a necessity, it was recommended we get one in the event of some situation in the US that would prompt US border closings.

30. Yes I have one, used it once, but...
I probably won't ever use it again. It is a relic of the immediate post-Clinton era - that happy period of affulence and cheap oil that made international travel possible. I used it to go to France for three weeks. Very glad I did, as I doubt I'll ever be able to afford to do something like that again.

33. Yes
I've had one for a long time, and use it fairly often.

If you sign up for email notifications from various cheap ticket places, you would be amazed at some of the low prices you can find. If you've got a passport in hand and some extra money to spare you can jump on those opportunities. The lowest yet was, and I am not joking, $374 roundtrip from Houston to Tokyo!

40. Yes.
My husband and I renewed ours this past year. In July, we used it to get into Canada for our trip to Niagara Falls and Toronto. It's a lot easier that having to use your drivewr's license and birth certificate. After 2007, a passport will be required to go into Canada, Mexico and many Caribbean destinations.
