UN: Nearly 6,600 Iraqi civilians killed in July, August
http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/09/20/iraq.main/index.html

Violence killed nearly 6,600 Iraqi civilians during July and August, while more than 8,000 were wounded, according to a report released Wednesday by the U.N. Assistance Mission in Iraq.

More than 20,600 Iraqi civilians have died in attacks so far this year, according to UNAMI.

The carnage included a string of execution-style slayings, mortar and rocket attacks as well as suicide bombings apparently targeting civilians.

President Bush's News Conference - New York Times

QUESTION: As Iraqi troops are trained and take over the fight, American troops will come home.
The Pentagon now says they've trained 294,000 Iraqi troops and expect to complete their program of training 325,000 by the end of the year, but American troops aren't coming home. There are more there now than there were previously.
Is the goal post moving, sir?

BUSH: No. No. The enemy is changing tactics, and we're adapting. That's what's happening. And I asked General Casey today, Have you got what you need? He said, Yes, I got what I need. Look, we all want the troops to come home as quickly as possible. But they'll be coming home when our commanders say the Iraqi government is capable of defending itself and sustaining itself and it's governing itself. And, you know, I was hoping we would have or be able to -- hopefully Casey would come and say, You know, Mr. President, there's a chance to have fewer troops there. It looked like that might be the case until the violence started rising in Baghdad. And it spiked in June and July, as you know -- or increased in June and July.

I'm wondering what changes have been made in the enemies tactics? Execution type slayings, mortar and suicide car bombs have ruled the day for months if not years.
What an outrage that 6,600 deaths and 8,000 wounded have happened in two months to Iraqi civilians. Bush's mass graves. 6,600 in two months? Of course there are mass graves.

2. That's two 9/11s for them this summer
Everything that has happened since 9/11 has been based on the loss of life on that day. Not to diminish that obviously but we are all supposed to just ignore the worse carnage of Iraq that has been done in response to something they had no control over or hand in? The cognitive dissonance hurts every day. :eyes:
