Third Baby Dies After Hospital Overdose
INDIANAPOLIS -- A premature baby girl has died at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, the third to pass away after being given an overdose of a blood thinner there.

A spokesman for the hospital said the baby had been transferred to Riley Hospital For Children and had been in critical condition since receiving the overdose on Saturday.

The baby -- identified as Thursday Dawn Jeffries -- died late Tuesday night.

Two other premature newborns, D'myia Nelson and Emmery Miller, died on Saturday and three others remain hospitalized. Methodist Hospital officials said the three are no longer showing effects from the overdose.

2. How the HELL do you overdose SIX BABIES??
Something is seriously wrong here. After the first overdose, shouldn't there have been someone watching/supervising? :grr:

4. perhaps only if there was some mislabeling of the meds.
Otherwise, this is highly suspicious.

5. Apparently the problem is packaging
because the drug company packaged the pediatric dosages of heparin exactly the same as the adult doses.

That was always a huge problem, look alike and sound alike drugs. The print on the vials is often so tiny it can't be seen without a magnifying glass, and a lot of trust has to be placed in the hospital pharmacy to make sure the right drug gets to the right drawer in the cabinet.

This isn't the first case of patient injury or death caused by this problem. Until Big Pill gets its act together, it won't be the last.

The people who will be held liable for this are the nurses who gave the drug and the pharmacists who dispensed it. Big Pill will get off Scot free, as usual.
