Calling all boycotters!!!
I've asked this question in a couple of other threads and haven't received any responses yet, so I'll ask it again.

To all of you folks who are boycotting ABC, Disney, ESPN, etc., what do you hope to accomplish by this?

I don't mean what message are you trying to send, but what change do you hope to effect? I've seen many posts that state "I'm done with ABC", or "I'm throwing away all my Disney DVDs" (which doesn't make sense to me anyway since they've already received money for those, but I digress) but to what end?

For a boycott to be successful, there needs to be an end goal that you can point to and say "See, when you reach THAT point, we'll start watching you again and buying your products!". I haven't seen anyone clearly state what that goal is yet. I do admit that I may have missed that statment with all the boycotting discussion that's been going on since PT911 however.

I'm not trying to be snarky and dis anyone (okay, except maybe the DVD thrower-awayers), I'm really curious what you hope to accomplish with your actions. Thanks for the replies.

1. Drive Them Out of Business?
After all, DeVos and his fundies' boycott are doing a smashing good job on Ford (although Ford is at least as guilty, for ignoring the needs of its customers, in the same way that Disney does).

2. For me it is the principle of where my money goes...
or more importantly where it doesn't go.

9. Yeah, exactly. I don't want to endorse that crap with my money.
If the situation improves I might change... it should be common sense not to lie to the nation using public airwaves. Any prescribed goals would be fudged until it looked like they were met, or a meaningless apology would be issued.

I'll use my own judgement as to whether the corporations are behaving properly, and continue to write occasional letters to them about their misbehaviors.

3. I think you're asking the wrong question.

The question is, how much can we get done between now and the end of the year? Can we get Disney to register the boycott?

And you're right. We haven't formalized a statement yet. It's still early if we want to affect their holiday sales. I was going to take a stab at it but my family has needed my attention. Maybe I can put something up tonight or at least start a brainstorming thread. Or, if someone has one we can look at, put 'er up!

The last thing Disney wants is for us to become an effective political action group -- which is what we are becoming everytime we plan and execute one of these action.

We can be every bit as dogged as the wingers. But, we need to organize ourselves and we need to reach out to all the progressive we know. Those fake Christians groups didn't spring from Rove's head fully formed, ya know?

4. I don't support rightwing fascist pigs, & I DON'T CARE what effect it has.

It's a matter of principle. I couldn't look myself in the mirror if I were to support these thugs in any way for one more second after they aired their piece of propagandistic garbage. For me, ABC/Disney DOES NOT EXIST. Is that good enough for ya?

8. Actually no
it's not good enough for me. It's a strange attitude to take. You're not a big believer in change are you? If they were to make a statment denouncing their actions in PT911, endorse a democratic candidate for president, fire everyone believed to be republican on the board, and send you a personal email apologizing, they still wouldn't exist to you? Obviously none of these things is going to actually occur, at least not on such a grand scale, but you really need to consider giving people another chance if they decide to change.

16. I would be happy to help in any way I can.
I've called and emailed them and they do not care about my opinions. Therefore, I do not care about them. But if there is some organized way to further spread the message to boycott the thugs, count me in.

Boycatt Disney and ABC: No to Propaganda on Public Airwaves!

On the fifth anniversary of September 11, ABC/the Walt Disney Company sponsored a "docudrama" that purported to represent the events of 9/11. In reality, "The Path to 9/11" was a propaganda piece that sought to shamefully politicize 9/11 in the run up to our November elections.

ABC/ Disney ignored the objectionss of nonpartisan terrorism experts Richard Clarke and Randy (whatshisname). They ignored the objections of government officials directly involved in the events this flawed production represented, and they went ahead with the airing.

Most of all, ABC/Disney ignored the public. We asked them not to politicize 9/11, our national tragedy, on a weekend when we should be mourning our dead. And they didn't listen.

Let's help them listen.

BOYCOTT DISNEY/ABC THROUGH January 1, 2007! NO CHRISTMAS FOR MICKEY!

-- Sign the boycott's Statement of Purpose (I need help putting one up on the net!)

-- Boycott ALL Disney products: Parks, DVDs, Films, ABC (what else, guys?)

-- Boycott Disney stores in your local mall. If possible -- take a copy of our Statement of Purpost to Disney stores and give a copy to the store personell. If you can stand on public property, hand the Statement out as a flyer.

-- Attend or organize protests at Disney parks and hotels. You can find their locations at:
http://destinations.disney.go.com/parksandresorts/index

-- Contact Iger and tell him your family will be boycotting Disney on all its platforms over this holiday season. (Iger's addy. It's here somewhere)

Thank you

10. I think you're getting closer
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 11:20 AM by Wally101
but you're calling for action AFTER they have already done something. Even if they suddenly had a change of heart, they have already aired the program and can't take that back. What purpose does the boycott serve (aside from letting them know we're pissed about PT911), what action does it urge them to take in the future? I think if you add some "demands" about their future programming to your above statment, you've got a really good start going.

11. After, yes. We call this a logical consequence of their behavior.
The basic demands are 1) Stop politicizing 9/11 and 2) Be responsive to the public that owns the airwaves AND that buys Disney products.

#2 could be refined but narrowing it too much is unnecessarily coersive, imho, to both sides of the conflict.
