Frist and White House Promise to Filibuster for Torture

Dissidents' Detainee Bill May Face Filibuster
Frist Warns GOP Opponents of Bush's Proposal They Must Accept Two Key Provisions

By Charles Babington and Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writers
Wednesday, September 20, 2006; Page A04

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist signaled yesterday that he and other White House allies will filibuster a bill dealing with the interrogation and prosecution of detainees if they cannot persuade a rival group of Republicans to rewrite key provisions opposed by President Bush.

With Congress scheduled to adjourn in nine days, delaying tactics such as a filibuster could kill the drive to enact detainee legislation before the Nov. 7 elections, a White House priority. Bush faced still more problems in the House, where GOP moderates Christopher Shays (Conn.), Michael N. Castle (Del.), Jim Leach (Iowa) and James T. Walsh (N.Y.) publicly threw their support behind the bill opposed by the White House. The four Republicans told Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) that any House bill must maintain the dissidents' principles.

On another front, legislation to authorize Bush's warrantless wiretapping program may be in more jeopardy. Frist said yesterday that he referred the warrantless surveillance matter to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence for further review and would not bring it up for Senate consideration until next week.

"supports the President" and "opposes the terrorists." That will be the rationale to square that circle ... if they are even pressed to provide one at all. You can rationalize anything when you're shameless and completely intellectually dishonest.

4. Until Democrats and the handful of Republicans CALL it torture
and threaten to legislatively shut down government if we condone TORTURE, then we are doomed to lose this battle too.

However, on another note, Canada doesn't seem to have a problem rendering people to the U.S. for "effective questioning" either.

I do hate this America - it is a dishonest, creepy, fascist, film noire cautionary social science fiction tale, that just happens to be happening right this very moment in front of our eyes, and for real.

Only, we don't get to throw away our empty drink and popcorn bag and leave the theatre when it's over.

25. Yeah, calling it "concessions" and "compromises" does NOTHING
to address THE fact that our government wants people who work for us to VOTE...in our democracy and in OUR name...to ALLOW torture.

The phrase is "allow torture"...not "concession"...not "compromise"

No...we want to vote to OK torture...and there is no age limit on this kids...torture means we can TORTURE an infant in front of its parent to elicit a response or confession or information, real or imagined or made up....torture means we can RAPE a 3/4/5/6 year old in front of his/her mother/father/caregiver to ELICIT a response or confession or information, real or imagined or made up. Torture does NOT limit the actual physical act to the one we want to ELICIT a response from.

For the love of whatever god/deity/moral code you observe..this needs to end RIGHT now. No vote. Not in MY name...you fuckers on the senate floor ALL of you work for us...and as your employer I call for no vote right NOW. Move on...drop it...or if you have no power to do so...CALL IT WHAT IT IS...A VOTE TO PERMIT TORTURE, CAST ON BEHALF OF EVERY MAN, WOMAN AND CHILD IN THE UNITED STATES.

I will not tolerate it.

6. Revolting - anyone know which state grant's Frist his medical license?
As a physician, it is unconscionable he would filibuster for torture; he will be enthusiastically promoting harm to other human beings - unethical and in violation of his hippocratic oath.

I will be calling his office and the state board of medical examiners as soon as I find out which state.

23. Yep - they're already watching him
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist acknowledged Tuesday that he may not have met all the requirements needed to keep his medical license active - even though he gave paperwork to Tennessee officials indicating that he had.

The state of Tennessee requires its licensed physicians to complete 40 hours of continuing medical education every two years. Frist, a heart-lung surgeon who is considering a 2008 presidential run, submitted a license renewal with the Tennessee Health Department stating he has fulfilled that requirement.

Responding Tuesday to repeated requests from The Associated Press, a Frist spokesman said the Republican senator may not have done his continuing education after all, and had contacted the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners to see if corrective steps were necessary.

Good.

9. We need to make Frist/Bushco pay a political price for promoting torture.
Who is going to stand up publicly and accuse Frist of promoting torture?

It is a fact, and a House resolution needs to be put to a vote stating as much, requiring every member of go on the record.

14. I have never in my life been ashamed to be an American
Even with all of the the crap that the Bush Regime has done in the past 5 years I still knew that overall the US was a great country but just under poor management.

If these republicans filibuster in order to allow the use of torture, truly I am ashamed of this country. And I fear because if for any reason I am detained under a political nature (like being rounded up for a protest), I have no idea what kind of treatment I could expect and that scares me!

"Waterboarding in popular culture

The medieval form of waterboarding was represented as having been used by the Waffen SS of the Third Reich in the Robin Williams movie Jakob the Liar.

A waterboarding incident was depicted in an episode of the television series "The 4400" entitled "The New World" (June 11, 2006).

Mel Gibson's character in the film Conspiracy Theory is subjected to waterboarding during interrogation by a CIA spook played by Patrick Stewart.

On July 13th, 2006, Christine Axsmith, a software contractor for the CIA, was fired for criticizing CIA's torture policy in her blog post titled Waterboarding is Torture and Torture is Wrong."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_boarding

My question: Who was responsible for firing Christine Axsmith? Did the command to do so begin in the VP's office?

edit: A little more research, Boston Globe reports she was fired by upper levels in the CIA and now is concerned about being prosecuted for using government computers. So much for speaking truth to power. I cannot confirm the waterboarding practice by the Third Reich, but since it seems to be such a common method of torture throughout history, perhaps someone else can confirm this with a source.

33. Yes! Do it! Do it!
I can't think of anything more stupid or destructive to the Republican agenda. Filibustering draws more attention to the issue, exposes division within the Republican Party, underscores the value and use of filibustering, and wrecks the sociopathic pre-election Republican legislative agenda.

Write your Republican Senator to encourage the use of the filibuster today.
