So what's the goal with Disney/ABC?
Now I see that Apple (a blue company) is supposed to be boycotted because of PT9/11. That Steve Jobs is the largest shareholder in Disney. So, by logical extension anything Al Gore must be boycotted too, as he's on Apple's Board of Directors.

What is it that you want Disney to do? As with any boycott, a goal has to be in place, but I've heard none offered so far.

Apologize for the travesty they broadcast a couple of weeks ago?
Bring back a real Nightline and talk about BBV?
Fire the CEO?
Kill the production of any sequels to Shaggy Dog? (Joke, but not a bad idea)
Film a new mini-series based on Bush's lies that led to invading Iraq?
Distribute Michael Moore's Sicko?
Denounce the GOP?
Be REAL journalists and ask the tough qiestions?
Bring back "Commander in Chief" only with the lady Prez as a Democrat?

Any of these would be feasable (although some very tall) goals, but if you think, even for a moment that any boycott will render Disney bankrupt, sorry but that's just dodging at windmills. Mickey Mouse is the most recognized icon in the world, followed by Nintendo's Mario at a distant second. Even if the current power structure does somehow go bankrupt, then all of Dinsey's assets and properties will live on under a different power structure. It's impossible to make them go away.

So what's the goal? What would be good enough for Disney to earn back the trust they lost with this travesty of a "docudrama"? If the goal is just to write them off forever, then that is an easily broken pledge. Sooner or later, something will be broadcast on ABC, your kids will beg to visit a Disney park, or a new Touchstone movie will be released that you will want to watch (or Duers will tell everybody it's important to see), and then it's all over with the boycott. With a goal in mind, then you can always wait to see said film until after Disney atones for PT9/11 and makes you happy again.

1. Well, the ultimate goal would be to have the English alphabet
reduced to 23 letters, beginning with D. Then we'll know we're successful.

3. Disney ensnared our children long before I was born.
As long as they still make animated features, the children will make their parents give in. Disney is a religion for children, and everybody knows that.

I'm not forgiving them for tainting that with this propaganda pice mini-series, and they should be made to realize that they fucked up with it. However, the reality is that any boycott must have a goal to ensure some sort of corporate responsibility, or it's doomed from the start.

Apple executives are hiring lawyers as the company's stock options debacle continues.

The news emerges as Apple CEO Steve Jobs faces further enquiries following revelations that two senior executives at his one-time other company, Pixar, were also granted share options in a way that maximised their value.

5. Peddle the Apple hating propaganda somewhere else.
Political contributions are made by INDIVIDUALS! Those contributions are linked to the company that the contributers work for. Corporate donations are ILLEGAL, and have been since McCain Feingold. Cherry picking $2000 here and there, and conveniently omitting any Dem contributions does not bolster your case.

When are you going back to troll the Mac forum with more links to porno sites Nomad?

I don't care what Disney does, they suck and obviously want to see the GOP stay in power. Fuck them and anyone associated with them. I can understand the average person trying to eek out a living working for Disney. The CEOs and such, I hope they all rot in Hell for helping Bush spread his fear and hatred.

8. ABC news
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 10:10 AM by wryter2000
First, let me say I get my news from links I follow from DU. However, sitting with my dh and playing with my snakeys while watching the news was a family tradition that I've continued after my husband's death. I like to see what is going out over the airwaves as "mainstream" news.

With LaCouric at CBS, I decided to switch to ABC, as I can't watch GE's version of the news. (The dh and I did one night, and yoiks, it was awful!)

Anyway, I've been very pleasantly surprised. With the exception of Stephanopolous, the coverage hasn't been bad at all. I watched very carefully to see what they'd do about PT9/11, and on the whole, the coverage was negative. BenVeniste got the most face time, and they cut right to him where he was holding the 9/11 Commission report very prominently in front of his chest. The message was clear -- PT9/11 was not true to that report.

Last night, they had a substantial piece on the Canadian of middle eastern extraction who was totally innocent of any terrorism -- a point they made more than once -- who was taken to (I think) Syria where he was tortured for 10 months. Again the message was clear -- the US government is arranging for torture of innocent people. From Canada, no less.

19. Aside from the subthread diversion, I guess it's a toughy.
Since after a few good posts about what to do, or what the plan is, this thread dropped like a rock, I'd have to conclude that the majority of DUers don't actually want Disney to do the right thing, and just want to boycott for life. Oh' well. I guess I got my answers.

...that is until a new Miramax documentary, narrated by Martin Sheen, is released that shows the elections in 200-2006 really were stolen, and that Bush* has always been illegitimate. Then Disney will be the heroes of the progressive pro-people movement, and PT9/11 or this boycott will have never existed.:eyes:

22. I'd go along with that.
They were more than willing to do it for the Newsmaxers they fellated for ratings. The perps are independant filmmakers (hacks) however, so they're not empoloyed by ABC, but we could get ABC/Disney to never do business with them again. Those that greenlit this fiasco should be fired, I agree.

31. Not right....
... because if there's a large disconnect between the nielsen viewing habits, and the entire population (which will be judged by advertisers' roi expectations not being met, after correcting for all other variables), then one would expect there to be a shake-up in the manner in which nielsen families are chosen.

I.e., the viewing behavior of the population as a whole helps to shape just *who* the nielsen families are, and hence they can be influential.

29. That's kind of the point I'm making.
With any boycott, there must be a final outcome that the boycotter wants said target company to do. You can't really punish a company for wrongdoing if you don't give them a chance to atone for the transgression, and earn your loyalty back, if you just decide to cut them off forever (which is doubtful). You can't just boycott because they did something forever, because it would be doomed to failure from the start. Nobody with kids can resist the "Dad, can we..., Dad, can we..., Dad, can we..." begging, demanding, whining to go see Johnny Depp in a pirate costume again, much less avoid the DVD purchase if it shuts them up even for 5 minutes.

I think many of the pure soul boycotters aren't much Disney fans, into pop culture or have no kids in the first place, so they don't care whether or not Disney does the right thing in the future, as they never had anything to do with Disney in the first place, or don't have a TV in the house, live in a yurt, and eat wheat germ and granola bars all day. But... Watch them come out of the woodwork saying "WWWHHHYYYYYY!" if a boycott was ever called on Phish, Bob Marley (Jamaica is major homophobe central, and he never sang about gay oppression, so he must have condoned it, right?) Grateful Dead or their local head shop that has a no "no fat chicks allowed" sign on the futon display though. :eyes:

On the same token, it's easy for me to boycott Fox News, since I don't pay the extra price for the next tier cable package that it comes on, so it's really no trouble for me to boycott them.

28. Has our "boycott" had much of an effect? I think we were too broad.
It's really tough to have a boycott against such a huge entity. Plus it wasn't even measurable. They can only measure viewership via nielsen viewership.

30. Boycotts Are Like Herding Cats...How About A Nice Little Party?
Trying to "hurt" a conglomerate as large as Disney is impossible. As the OP notes, you need to focus in on one particular product and then you have to not only spread the word, but keep spreading it and spread it again and again to make it effective. This can work on a local scale, but to expect millions to be able to remember which Disney product to boycott is unrealistic. Even if there is a boycott, unless its extremely targeted, it won't show up on the corporate bottom line. These corporations grew large and diversified specifically to avoid having their bottom line rely on just one or two products.

I've long felt the best way these corporates will feel is, is to see us. Numbers...and loud one...can sure get some head turned here...especially if they see that there's a downside to continuing to serve as a PR service for the Repugnican party.

It'd be fun to get a couple thousand DU'ers, Kosacks, FDL'ers, PDA'ers and all else to get together in front of the corporate headquarters...in large enough numbers that the corporate media can't deny our presence and will take note of our growing size. For years, the right wing has "jobbed" the refs in the corporate media through being seen and heard...time for us to even the score.
