Video: Block the Vote http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/235/video.html {I strongly encourage DUers to watch this!!!}

Block the Vote

About the Show

Across the nation, states have enacted new laws supposedly designed to prevent voter fraud and avoid election-day debacles. But qualified voters may also be left out in the cold, especially minorities, the poor, the elderly and the disabled.

This week NOW looks at several states where these new rules may keep voters away from the polls in November.

Critics charge that the Bush administration is part of the problem as the U.S. Department of Justice, which is charged with protecting the rights of all voters, has signed off on a number of the new regulations.

In Florida, new penalties that can reach up to $5,000 for registration delays or problems, which forced traditional registration advocacy groups, like the League of Women Voters, to avoid registering voters for a crucial primary.

"The law has done harm because the League of Women Voters, as well as other organizations, were not able to register voters before the primary," said Dianne Wheatley-Giliotti, the president of the LWV in Florida.

1. Can't say the warnings haven't been forthcoming...don't bitch election day
when perhaps a wide spread of "irregularities start popping up, this election is every bit as important as the other one Bush/Rove rigged!

Guess it's okay as long as they have the required documents/ID... never mind those who don't or can't get them. :argh:

28. Crony capitalism, stolen elections. What does this remind you of?

Crony capitalism, stolen elections, suppression of dissent, maniacal supporters who act like thugs.

You got it.

FERDINAND MARCOS !!

If they got rid of him over there we can get rid of him over here.

People power.

... hard to tell sometimes. *sigh*

Sometimes people really can't seem to accept anything beyond their own (sometimes very limited) experience... they haven't personally encountered X, so X does not exist.

83. As usual, you've said it so very well!! Nothing will change unless/
until Dems start looking inward, and seeing where they/we are making the same assumptions as the RW. sigh... Like that's gonnna happen.

I'm finding myself saying to people over and over and over... "IT's NOT an individual problem--it's a systemic failure."

You'd think, after witnessing Katrina the way we did, that this would have been the BIG LESSON--it's not individual fault, it's systemic failure.

But, I guess we're a society that is so determined to be ruggedly individualistic, regardless of evidence to the contrary, that all the proof counts for nada.

That's why I get so ANGRY at the term "Voter fraud"!!! THere was so much crap in 2000 about voters being soooo stoooooopid, they marked the ballots wrong. GAK!! It was done purposely, to throw the election, but the individual voters get blamed. How.... convenient.

Same will happen, I'm guessing, when the Nov results show system failure with the machines... somehow it will be "Voter fraud".

Yes, I'm on a rant... I'm so very sick of all this!

It's the SYSTEM, DAMMIT!!

Now they know for sure that they can do just as much damage to us with suppression smoke and mirrors as with the machines.

The element of surprise is another trick that works for them.

What the Democratic Party is doing is NOT working IMO.

61. Thanks,
another long time lurker coming out. I've read DU for several years now but until recently I haven't really entertained the thought of being an active DU member, mainly due to time. I really enjoy and appreciate all the research this group does to try to answer so many questions that the msm just completely ignores. I know many mothers of small children who don't have the time to sift through all the crap to find the good stuff. We love places like the DU because those who do have the time or the know-how share that knowledge. I bet you (the DU community) influence more people than you'll ever know. It's a great thing!
So, thank you for having me and for all of your hard work. :applause:

84. Two new articles from Colorado on the voting machines:
Yes, this is a bit different from the PBS show, but since my posts tend to drop to obscurity, I"m going to post this heads up here:

From yesterday:
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/elections/article/0,2808,DRMN_24736_5007194,00.html

"Fear of fraud in the November election will be confronted head-on in a Colorado courtroom today when a lawsuit goes to trial on whether computerized voting machines should be banned because they are too susceptible to tampering.
The state will argue that voting on computer screens is safe because a person's ballot also is recorded on a printout, allowing spot checks for fraud and miscounts after the polls close."
snippage

"The controversy in Colorado is part of a growing nationwide clamor over the possibility of election fraud, fueled by continuing anger over problems from the 2000 presidential election, which George W. Bush won by only a few hundred votes in the deciding state, Florida, and after a Supreme Court decision. "

more snipping
"In today's lawsuit, a bipartisan group of voters is arguing that Secretary of State Gigi Dennis used an unqualified staffer to certify the machines and that he did little security testing as required by state law.
Princeton University computer experts last week released a study, saying they can reprogram machines made by Diebold to distort votes with just a screwdriver, a tiny flashdrive loaded with software and one minute of time."

From today's paper:
Court hears challenge to new voting machines
Plaintiffs say devices subject to tampering, should be decertified
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_5009489,00.html

"The Colorado Secretary of State's Office was in chaos when it certified four types of computerized voting machines, according to testimony Wednesday in a lawsuit seeking to ban the machines from being used in the November election.

A bipartisan group of voters is suing the office, saying the certification procedure was shoddy and the machines are vulnerable to tampering. Voters across Colorado used the equipment in the August primary, marking their choices on a computer screen."

snip

"John Gardner, who took charge of the testing after Vest quit, testified that he considered two of his assistants incompetent. Gardner himself acknowledged he had no education in computer science, but said he made up for that with his experience.

Diebold, one of the four manufacturers of the machines, was found to be misrepresenting its equipment, plaintiffs' attorneys said. As a result, Diebold machines were decertified after the 2005 election - in which they had just been used. "

85. bobbolink, please post this in the Election Reform forum,
It is less likely to drop because it takes an entire one to two days and longer for threads to move off the front page.

Just lift it as it is and paste it into a original post. I promise that I'll keep it kicked. :hi: It's a terrific post!

87. Thanks, Kurovski! I've become very discouraged at trying to
post things that I think are important, or ...even just spirit-lifting.

Sigh... yanno, I just don't have one of those names that people gravitate towards... :hi: Thanks for noticing these articles!

Thanks, and I'll post this there.

Hope I'm technologically able to do it...

Hmmm, to post them seperately, or together... hmmm... decisions, decisions...

86. Thank you for posting these!
:hi:

May be a bit different from the show discussed in the OP, but just as vitally important!!! It's part of the double pronged attack against Democratic voters.

(btw, I posted a link to the next show in the series in post #23. It's about the machines... called 'Down for the Count'.)

88. Most welcome! Your job now is to keep fingers crossed for CO!
This has been so up and down---I was in the original group that met at Mercury Cafe in Jan, 2005. A lot of ANGRY people, a lot of SCARED people, and a lot of folks determined to try to get our Democracy back.

I'm very proud of them for doing all this work, and pulling out all the stops to try to protect voting in Colorado! Job well done, folks!
:applause:

No matter the outcome, you're all heroes! :patriot:
