Check out this new car!!!!!
:bounce:French auto runs on compressed air technology:bounce:

December 2, 2004 French engineers have designed a low consumption and low pollution engine for urban motoring that runs on compressed air technology. The CATS (Compressed Air Technology System) "air car" from Motor Development International is a significant step for zero-emission transport, delivering a compressed air-driven vehicle that is safe, quiet, has a top speed of 110 km/h and a range of 200 km. Costing next to nothing to run, the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) range - which includes a pick-up truck and van - is set for release in early 2005.

Cyril Nègre is the head of Research and Development at Moteur Developement International (MDI) cars, where the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) prototype has been in production since 1994. The two-stroke engine is powered by compressed air stored in tanks at about 150 times the pressure of tyres on a car. The expansion of the compressed air drives the pistons to create movement, replacing the burning of fossil fuel in a conventional engine. In an air-refilling station (currently unavailable as service stations have not been fitted yet) it is estimated to take between three and four minutes to re-fuel. At home, with a 220V plug, it takes three and a half hours.

Nègre estimates a full tank of air will cost around 1.50 euros to fill and that the extra reward is knowing that you are pumping nothing harmful into the atmosphere. The hidden environmental cost with the CATS is that electricity must still be generated and the means of that production may still employ fossil fuels that discharge pollutants. Still, the savings to the pocket and environment appear well worth investigating. Four models are available for the commercial market - the MiniCAT car at approximately €6 860 euros, or the CitiCATs, including a taxi (with room for up to 5 passengers), a Pick-Up truck and a van, all retailing for approximately €9,460 euros plus taxes.

Air powered engine

This engine uses an innovative system to control the movement of the 2nd generation pistons and one single crankshaft. The pistons work in two stages: one motor stage and one intermediate stage of compression/expansion. The engine has 4 two-stage pistons, i.e. 8 compression and/or expansion chambers. They have two functions: to compress ambient air and refill the storage tanks; and to make successive expansions (reheating air with ambient thermal energy) thereby approaching isothermic expansion. Its steering-wheel is equipped with a 5kW electric moto-alternator. This motor is simultaneously:

MDI CAT´s compressed air technology cars.

MDI introduces compressed air vehicles to the market.

MDI has developed a high performance compressed air technology. When it is compared to traditional gasoline powered engines, MDI´s engine is far superior in terms of energy used and thermodynamics.

An overview of the air car
The technology that MDI vehicles use is not new, in fact it had been around for years. Compressed air technology allows for engines that are both non polluting and economical. After ten years of research and development, MDI is prepared to introduce its clean vehicles onto the market. Unlike electric or hydrogen powered vehicles, MDI vehicles are not expensive and do not have a limited driving range. MDI cars are affordable and have a performance rate that stands up to current standards. To sum it up, they are non-expensive cars that do not pollute and are easy to get around cities in.

Two technologies have been developed to meet different needs:
Single energy compressed air engines
Dual energy compressed air plus fuel engines
The single energy engines will be available in both Minicats and Citycats. These engines have been conceived for city use, where the maximum speed is 50 km/h and where MDI believes polluting will soon be prohibited. It is already possible see examples of this in some places, such as London, where you want to enter the city center with gasoline powered vehicles, you must pay a fee.

The duel energy engine, on the other hand, has been conceived as much for the city as the open road and will be available in all MDI vehicles. The engines will work exclusively with compressed air while it is running under 50 km/h in urban areas. But when the car is used outside urban areas at speeds over 50 km/h, the engines will switch to fuel mode. The engine will be able to use gasoline, gas oil, bio diesel, gas, liquidized gas, ecological fuel, alcohol, etc.

Both engines will be available with 2, 4 and 6 cylinders, When the air tanks are empty the driver will be able to switch to fuel mode, thanks to the car's on board computer.

Urban vehicles: Minicat's

Longer distance vehicles: Citycat's (the new CityCat's design will be introduced soon)

Taxis: a taxi version of the Citycat

Apart from applying its technology to CAT´s vehicles, MDI is also developing compressed air engines for other fields, such as electric cogeneration and energy accumulation. See other applications

MDI has recently been rewarded for its hard work and long investigation into clean engines. Last February, the French government awarded MDI the "La Palma de Oro de la Academia Nacional para el Fomento de la Creatividad Industrial, Artesana y Artística." 2. What happens in an accident?
150 times car tire pressure (say 30 psi) is 4500 psi

4500 psi + big tank + rupture = BIG BOOM

57. 4500 psi is pretty high pressure.
I had to work on 3300 psi systems in the navy. That stuff is dangerous and I can't picture an average person handling it any more than I could picture them handling liquid hydrogen.

68. isn't that true for
cars we drive now? In case of accident the fuel we carry has the potential to do some terrible things. If you read the site, the car is built with a roll-frame, and the tanks are made to safety standards that lp vehicles use, and firefighter SCOT packs-

It wouldn't explode- but it could release it's air quickly. I had a split rim tire explode on me and break my thumb (it was a small wheelbarrow tire, which I thought was completely deflated, but I was wrong, and it hurt like crazy- and yes, I'm a woman, but I had my husband telling me what to do  )

If the air was released only in one small area, it could do alot of damage --like the rim blowing off of the wheel- But the way they say the tank is constructed, it doesn't worry me as much as a wheel/tire. The tank wouldn't simply blow off a shard, from what I understand.

34. Without doing "deep" research
this if from the FAQ on the web page.

Do Cat's Vehicles stand up in terms of safety? Do you need a drivers licence?

Our vehicles will be approved like all cars (M1) and follow the same safety rules and regulations. The car's tubular body allow for increased resistance in case of a crash. You will need a drivers licence like you do for any other car.

This isn't a big help, but I'll do a 5 min. google because I'm curious, too. It may just be too new to know at this point.

60. I don't wonder at all. They can hardly give the junk away now, so they
want to make new junk! Bozos.

59. I hereby pronounce it bullshit!
I don't think you can compress enough air to store the energy needed for a practical car. Here's a test:

But at MDI's grudging admission, the prototypes do not yet live up to their promised levels of performance. In fact, in the only published road test to date, one of the cars traveled a little over seven kilometers (4.5 miles) on a full tank of air. With the proper materials and a few refinements, MDI insists it will go much farther.

Maybe some real physics guys can run the numbers and get better results. I'm going on instinct.

The real catch is that you need energy to compress the air, which brings us back to the original problem. What is the energy source?

What I think is more promising is the recently posted proposed vehicle with motors in the wheels. Seems more efficient to me. Still needs an energy source. Here, I see a role for the new solar technologies.

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/08/the_hybrid_mini.php

A British engineering firm has put together a high-performance hybrid version of BMW's Mini Cooper. The PML Mini QED has a top speed of 150 mph, a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds. The car uses a small gasoline engine with four 160 horsepower electric motors — one on each wheel. The car has been designed to run for four hours of combined urban/extra urban driving, powered only by a battery and bank of ultra capacitors. The QED supports an all-electric range of 200-250 miles and has a total range of about 932 miles (1,500 km). For longer journeys at higher speeds, a small conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) is used to re-charge the battery. In this hybrid mode, fuel economies of up to 80mpg can be achieved.

There are still technical problems. Environmental problems with batteries, the weight of the wheels with motors, etc.

This looks like a better avenue to me.

Also, if someone has more current and direct knowledge, I stand to be corrected.

62. That looks like a good avenue to me. I am glad to see so many ideas
being tested. Some will flop, but a few will make it. My main form of transportation is my Bierkenstocks and the transit system, but for the sake of the planet, I hope we can come up with some alternatives that will work to reduce co2 escalation fast.

66. No doubt we will.
Sorry for the pessimism, mom cat. The air car, to me, seems like a wind-up thing, and I don't think it will hold enough energy. In any case, it's the source that matters.

What I am more optimistic about is solar. There is so much sunlight. We are just beginning to be able to collect it.:)

69. I agree with you there. I would love to see a solar car, or at least
an electric car that runs on solar energy from ones home panels of from ones Green Energy company.

64. Yup. Additionally...
I'm not volunteering to carry a 5000 psig tank of compressed air around in my car. They say it's safe, but compressed gas is compressed gas, and 5000 psi is a lot of it.

Also, the car is only as clean as the source of the electricity, and less efficient. Although this idea is cool, my money is stil on biodiesel.

65. From that picture of the hose attached to the car...
there is no way in HELL that apparatus would hold 5KPSI. I wouldn't want to be within a kilometer of
that if they were putting that kind of pressure on it. These people obviously flunked thermodynamics 101. There MIGHT be 8 or 10 kilowatt-hours of energy in a 'regular-size' tank of compressed air
that a car could haul around. It might get you to the next 'refueling' station if it's not more than 2 blocks away.

67. my youngest son has an "air- hog" plane that runs on compressed
air- no batteries, no cans of fuel- just air.
It's one toy that doesn't need anything but kid power- a nice alternitave.

How I'd love to have a vehicle like this, with a bio-diesel back-up. (rural area here)

Thanks for the hopeful info- I put my name on the list too- doesn't hurt to dream eh???

some of these dream cars will come true.
