On his first meeting at the White House, he remembers shaking the hand of the president, who turned to “an aide nearby, who squirted a big dollop of hand sanitizer in the president’s hand.”

“Not wanting to seem unhygienic,” the senator writes, he also “took a squirt.”

He told Yeas & Nays that the process of writing this book was similar to his first, “Dreams from My Father,” “in the sense that they were both painful.”

That sounds like a good way to sanitize a war criminal's hand before one must shake it.

8. It's official: Bush really IS Saddam!

General Perry Smith, who was one of CNN's military analysts during Desert Storm, wrote a book about his experiences. (It's called "How CNN Fought The War" and I thought it was decent.) In it he talks about Peter Arnett's interview with Saddam Hussein. There was hand sanitizer in use then too.

So let me see...he has food tasters...he uses hand sanitizer to protect against germs of mass destruction (obviously someone would just dunk his hand in anthrax or AIDS or something then just waltz right in to do the ol' Grip And Grin with the preznit of the Yoo-Nited States of Amerika)...when can we formally get him declared a Nut-Ball Tin-Horn Dick-Tater?

9. Did he sanitize before or after shaking hands?

I can think of innocent reasons for sanitizing before shaking hands with someone else (colonized with flesh-eating bacteria and don't want to infect someone else) and also for sanitizing after shaking hands (severely immune compromised and normal skin flora could be deadly). I can also think of a whole lot of psychologically-motivated reasons for it, beginning with OCD and ending at outright racism...some of those reasons would have no bearing on a President's fitness for duty (OCD, controlled by meds, is no big deal) while others would severely compromise his fitness (paranoid delusions, racism).

This story needs more investigation IMO; we need to know which circumstances compel Bush to sanitize his hands before/after shaking, and does he do it every time he shakes hands? What about when he rubs bald heads?

But pretty much nothing we discover would excuse the fact that it's awkward and looks bad in public and he should know better. But that would require social grace.
