Village elders order trial by boiling oil...
so just who are the contemporaneous/medieval brain police seriously...

'NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The leaders of a village in the Indian state of Rajasthan ordered 150 men to dip their hands into boiling oil to prove their innocence after food was stolen from a local school, a newspaper reported Sunday.

In late August the school's principal informed police that rice and wheat had disappeared but no action was taken, the Sunday Express said.

The council, or panchayat, of Ranpur village, 340 km (210 miles) south of state capital Jaipur, then decided to take the law into its own hands.

After 10 days spent trying to identify those responsible, it issued what the paper called the "medieval diktat."'

3. Hey, this is the country we are getting our medical and IT
specialists from. How can there be such a deep pit between the educated and the ignorant and superstitious.

Oh hell, I guess if I went to a Dobson or Phelps church service I experience it first hand, couldn't I?

8. the next time some helpline guy you can barely understand
named "Lee" asks "is there anything else I can (not) help you with today?"

You have your answer.

Actually, I was watching a documentary about Delhi and there is in fact a very deep and wide schism between the traditional old culture and the new more educated and westernized part of their society.

10. Wow.
"very deep and wide schism between the traditional old culture and the new more educated and westernized part of their society."

My God! Let's hope so! And let's hope the modern people win out This is ridiculous. We need some sort of action, sanctions or something, against countries that use this sort of medieval torture for law enforcement.

12. The torture & execution device exhibit was in my town a few years ago
It's obviously hard to look at but also very interesting. Each display had a narrative describing how, when and where the device was in common usage. The most shocking thing was how many are still currently in use, particularly in the ME and places like Pakistan & India.

4. And exactly how does that work?
The one who doesn't feel pain is guilty? The witch is made of wood because a duck floats?

It's that same childish excuse for logic that follows one from high school to boot camp and sometimes even into the workplace of punish everyone because the coach/drill instructor/boss can't figure out who screwed up.

Seriously it scares the hell out of me that there are still people on this planet that stupid.

Concerning how the false claims of WMD, contact with Al Qaeda, Iraq trying to buy nuclear fuel, what really happened in Florida in 2000, etc. etc. etc.

13. Voltaire would have loved this one. Perhaps he could do a sequal to
Candide, perhaps, Vishnudide about a boy who is sent out into the world having only 31 quarterings of arms vice the necessary 32, and after a series of misadventures, undergoes a trial by ordeal, only to be saved by his guru, at the last moment...

Talking about a culture gulf from Mumbai to Rajastan!
