Bush envoy faces congressional axe

JOHN BOLTON, President Bush’s controversial Ambassador to the United Nations, is in danger of losing his job as opposition to his appointment increases in the Senate.

Mr Bush’s nomination of Mr Bolton to the UN met such opposition on Capitol Hill last year that he was forced to install him by means of a recess appointment, when Congress was not in session.

Bolton wouldn't be eligible to be paid for his work. Read a story about it somewhere, but can't recall where, Maybe WaPo??

And the Heritage Foundation or the AEI could take care of him with a "retainer fee" for the tiem being.

It's just the way the reg is written - was certainly much more pertinent when "average joes" with actual expertise in an area were more likely to serve over the rich and well-connected. One observation - they NEVER do something for nothing.

8. You are correct, but there is a problem

Yes, he can appoint him and he has to work without pay. However, some federal law makes it illegal to work without pay.

There is another option but can not remember what it is.

Something like appointing him to a lower office that does not need congressional approval and then making him acting ambassador.
