Mods, this is NOT a post about israel or the lebanon invasion, but rather about the US and its lack of review and responsiveness.
Israel fights (badly) a war in Lebanon, suffering a bloody nose and worse. They lose their aura of invincibility, of overwhelming power, of inevitable victory. Their mistakes in Lebanon were there for all to see. Their use of anti-civilian weapons supplied by the US are now public knowledge. Their continued assault in Gaza is now infamous throughout the world, except, perhaps in the US. Israel knows that they blew it and blew it badly. So, what do they do? they create a task force with independent powers to answer these questions:
Why did we invade? Why did we heed obviously bad US advice and tactical planning? Why did we not seek out other methods of solving the problem? Why was our military so badly led? Why did we lose so many troops? How do we avoid these kinds of problems again?
Now, I was against their invasion, and as stated earlier, the point is not the Israeli response (which would put this post into the I-P forum) but the US response. or lack thereof. - - In 2003, we invaded Iraq, against the better judgment of many in the military. Rummie threatened to fire anyone who dared to mention any post-war planning. Riots, looting and sectarian war took place. There were no WMD. There was no connection between the Al Qaida and Saddam. There was no reason to invade. and yet, there is nothing on the horizon other than "Stay the Course"
Not one investigation, other than the recent Senate one - and only on the single issue of Saddam-Al Qaida. Not one review of policy. Even worse, not even one resignation for pursuing such idiotic policies and programs, so ineptly.
Why is it that America accepts the total lack of review and investigation? Why do we accept the idea that staying a course is a sane policy (indeed, even accepting that policy inertia actually constitutes a policy)? Why do we not kick our Congress in their collective ass and force them to do their constitutional job?
Mickie Edwards, (R) former congresscritter was on C-Span yesterday. I found his words chilling. He compared previous congresses in times of war. With a democratic president and congress, Sen Harry Truman was appointed to investigate raw greed in the military-industrial complex. And he did so successfully. In Viet Nam, again D presidents, and D congresscritters doing their duties investigating decision-making and crimes.
Yet with today's congress - silence. And the American people seem to totally acccept it.
