Has anyone read the Time article on Iran?
Edited on Mon Sep-18-06 07:54 PM by kohodog
I'm sick of having to pay for this kind of article.

Raw Story and others have teased with the first two paragraphs of the Time article on the Navy orders to get ready to blocade Iran.

"The first message was routine enough: a "Prepare to Deploy" order sent through naval communications channels to a submarine, an Aegis-class cruiser, two minesweepers and two mine hunters. The orders didn't actually command the ships out of port; they just said to be ready to move by Oct. 1. But inside the Navy those messages generated more buzz than usual last week when a second request, from the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), asked for fresh eyes on long-standing U.S. plans to blockade two Iranian oil ports on the Persian Gulf. The CNO had asked for a rundown on how a..."

This is more of the beginning of the end of news on the internet. The NYT started with "Times Select" and increasingly I find that you need to sign up for access to news articles. Some of these do not require money, but none are free.

I saw a t-shirt the other day that read: COPY = RIGHT

Many people agree with current copyright laws, but I'm beginning to wonder.

Is it ok for duers to each post four paragraphs of an article to allow everyone to read the whole thing? Or would that be an infringement?

2. A thought...
A group of DUers could chip in for subscriptions to some of the major news outlets like Time or NY Times Select and when an article is interesting it could be printed to PDF and stored at one of the major filesharing sites like RapidShare and the RapidShare link posted. I would zip and password protect the PDF and I would maintain a blogspot.com blog (they're free) for posting links to the zipped, password protected PDFs. You could post the password in a comment to the blog post with the RapidShare link. When you wanted to reference the article on DU you could link to both the actual source of the article and the blogpost containing the RapidShare link.

Whether or not it's copyright infringement is debatable I think but any court case would probably rule in favor of the copyright holder so you would want to take that into account. I am not advocating this but just sharing an idea.

5. David Byrne started "Creative Commons" and others are working on Pharma
Copyright is sacrosanct in the US, but I think it might be time to look seriously at this whole concept with regard to news organizations. Laws may not need to be changed, but public sentiment can influence corporations occasionally.

I believe it was Lawrence Lessig who started the Creative Commons, something I very much support given the role I've taken on in the last couple of years.
Headquartered in San Francisco, Creative Commons was officially launched in 2001. Lawrence Lessig, the founder and chairman, started the organization as an additional method of achieving the goals of his Supreme Court case, Eldred v. Ashcroft. The initial set of Creative Commons licenses was published on December 16, 2002 <5>. The project itself was honored in 2004 with the Golden Nica Award at the Prix Ars Electronica, for the category "Net Vision".

I have not heard about David Byrne's support for the CC but I would not be surprised to hear he favors it. Coopyright law has become nonsensical in the United States and is badly wanting of reform.

If organizations like Time and Newsweek were smart they would offer deals to sites like Democratic Underground that would allow their users to view subscription content for free but force them to sit through a Salon type flashvertisement or deliver ads on the content page. This could be pretty easily done by looking at referrer information in the HTTP requests and could be a way to generate more ad revenue than the subscribers bring in. Of course if someone subscribed they would bypass the ads altogether just as it's done with dKos or Slashdot. I'm considering something similar for Neural Gourmet once I move it over to the 4.7 codebase.
