NATO hails Afghan offensive as success
2006/9

By FISNIK ABRASHI, Associated Press Writer 14 minutes ago

KABUL, Afghanistan - NATO said Sunday that its two-week offensive in south Afghanistan was a "significant success" that had driven Taliban insurgents from their positions and opened the way for development. But violence was unabated, with suicide bombers killing two civilians and wounding six soldiers.

The developments came as the country is going through its bloodiest phase since the U.S.-led invasion ousted the hard-line Taliban from power in 2001.

Alliance officials have said more than 500 militants were killed during the two-week operation, centered mainly in Panjwai, Pashmul and Zhari districts of southern Kandahar province.

Two foreign military convoys in different areas came under attack from suicide bombers, a method frequently used by insurgents in Iraq .

NATO's high estimate of Taliban killed stirs doubt

KABUL, Afghanistan — NATO's estimate of Taliban killed this month has created skepticism and worry in Afghanistan. Local officials say that either the militant force has grown bigger than imagined or too many innocent Afghans are being killed.

NATO says its forces, backed by the Afghan army, have killed more than 500 Taliban militants near Afghanistan's main southern city of Kandahar in Operation Medusa, a sweep launched Sept. 2.

The figures, if accurate, make it the deadliest battle since U.S. warplanes bombed the extremist militia, host of Osama bin Laden.

"If they kill that many, the Taliban must have thousands of fighters on that front," said Mohammed Arbil, a former Northern Alliance commander. Recently, Taliban units have been described in terms of dozens or hundreds at most.

6. Body count
Just like Viet Nam. Its come down to the progress through body count trap. Call me when the Tali ban surrenders That will never happen even as we continue the count. This is same trap as progress through killing #2s in Iraq. They will never stop killing #2s either and with each one, no corner is turned.

7. First if they admit to 500, it probably means that there were
1500. And if it says militants, it means they used air raids and weapons with radio-active artillary. Anything they say on numbers is usually good to triple it.

Hasn't this happened a few times already in the last few weeks? Who knows. Just sayin. Bush has made me cynical about everything I hear coming out of BushCo's Iraq.
