2. Well think of ten people you walk buy on the street
6 and a half of them would apparently think what the Pope said was ok.

Of course the survey might have been worded poorly - there's a bit of a gap between thinking something is ok to say and agreeing with it.

8. AOL's polls have a margin of error of 95-99%.
They are about as reliable as Fred Barnes.

5. It is absolute maddness
how the response has been in regards to the pope's quote. KILL the pope for quoting a 14th century conversation. This might be my death nail here. But is the "Religion of Peace" really dedicated to that premis? I'm no fan of the pope either. I have joked he could be the anit-christ, so please don't mis-interpret my intention.

6. I still don't understand what the big deal is. so maybe you can help

I tried looking, but I didn't have time.

I read the quote, but I still don't understand the context of the original quote or the speech the pope was giving.

The only thing I could find was this letter to the editor from the Toronto Star

Set. 16.

The Pope's speech at the University of Regensburg intends no offence to Muslims. Quotation out of context to suggest a meaning not intended predates Islam and Christianity alike. The words widely quoted by the media are not those of the Pope but of a historical Christian figure (Manuel) engaged in a controversy with an "educated Persian." At issue between the two is the validity of violence to enforce religious conversion. The Pope tells their story to set up a broader question. Is it contrary to God's nature not to act in accordance with reason? Yes, says the Pope. He says nothing about whether Manuel's dim view of 14th century Islam as a religion of forced conversion was accurate or offensive.

That is not the point the Pope is dealing with. The story simply sets up a question of faith and reason. Manuel's 700-year-old perspective on Islam should not be attributed to the Pope today any more than teachers reciting Jack in the Beanstalk ("fee, fie, fo, fum") should be thought to advocate Anglophobic cannibalism.

11. Link?
I'm slow, really slow. What did the Pope say? All I can find are articles about people who want to kill the Pope and enslave all Christians now. Wasn't he just quoting someone else and using that to raise intellectual questions?
