Chinese surgeons have performed the world's first penis transplant on a man whose organ was damaged beyond repair in an accident this year. The incident left the man with a 1cm-long stump with which he was unable to urinate or have sexual intercourse. Doctors spent 15 hours attaching a 10cm penis to the 44-year-old patient after the parents of a brain-dead man half his age agreed to donate their son's organ....

Doctors have previously succeeded in reuniting men with their sexual organs after traumatic accidents or attacks, but the Guangzhou operation is the first in which a donor penis has successfully been attached to another man.

Although the operation was a surgical success, surgeons said they had to remove the penis two weeks later. "Because of a severe psychological problem of the recipient and his wife, the transplanted penis regretfully had to be cut off," Dr Hu said. An examination of the organ showed no signs of it being rejected by the body.

Look, I don't want to poke too much fun at the potentially tragic penis problems presented here, but maybe the pair's psychological problems developed from the perplexing expectations of physicians that a 10 cm penis would somehow be a proper prosthetic penis panacea. Let's look at what's going on here:

1) Guy suffers horrific accident, loses penis
2) Parents of brain-dead man allow his penis to be harvested for the transplant. In other words, these people said "go ahead and take our boy's member... he isn't going to be needing it". That's got to be tough for them.
3) Man goes through 15 hours of surgery to get new penis attached.
4) He and his wife go through some kind of psychological trauma accepting the new penis, which they ultimately cannot surmount, leading to
5) The accident victim going back to the surgeon to have the penis transplant removed because things were so bad he actually prefered having no penis at all.

If anybody could point out which of these steps is the funny one, I'd sure like to know.

In our state, all driver's license recipients must be asked if they want to donate their organs. She tells me that in the last three years or so, more than a dozen people have declined because they were afraid their eyes would be transplanted, and they somehow might be able to see after death.
