Casey: "slow-moving Katrinas" based on "malign neglect" of the neediest
Casey joins Democratic push to attract religious voters
By Thomas Fitzgerald
Inquirer Staff Writer

(excerpt)

"We can live up to our moral obligation to promote the common good only when we see the connection between our individual well-being and that of our neighbors, and the connection between our national security and the security of all nations," Casey said. "This is an idea worthy of our sacrifice and the proud traditions of our nation and our faith."

Casey delivered the school's 38th annual Pope John XXIII lecture. In so doing, he joined a growing number of Democrats attempting to broaden the values debate beyond questions of personal morality like same-sex marriage and abortion, arguing that faith demands economic justice and compassion.

(snip)

It is not enough to be against abortion, Casey said. "We cannot say we are against abortion of an unborn child and then let our children suffer in degraded inner-city schools and broken homes," he said. "We can't claim to be pro-life at the same time as we are cutting Medicaid or Head Start, and the Women, Infants, and Children's program."

(snip)

Casey, who does not support same-sex marriage but does endorse civil unions, said that moral issues had too often been exploited to divide voters and keep political power. He argued that the GOP, with tax breaks for the wealthy and ballooning budget deficits, threatened to cause "slow-moving Katrinas" based on "malign neglect" of the neediest in the nation.

"Justice demands our understanding that the hungry, the impoverished, and the uninsured in this country are not statistics, they are children of God. And they are our brothers and sisters."

1. James Dobson is coming to Pittsburgh this week. Ugh.
He's coming here to rally the troops to vote for Santorum.

"Pennsylvania is too important for us not to be here...especiallly in your Senate race," Dr. Dobson said in a radio interview last week. "Get to the polls. You know who to vote for. I won't tell you, because you already know."

They are endorsing Santorum without mentioning his name to get away with the tax breaks. This burns me up.

3. IMHO, it appears to me that Bob Casey "gets it."
He's not "clueless." He seems to be saying that what we need are the truly compassionate Christians...people who care about the impoverished and the sick and who want to take care of their needs.

4. I support the creation of a religious left, but they can just forget
the others. They are mean as Hell and they like starving people. Pass up the mega-churches to. It's all networking.

10. And it's good that Casey's not just pandering, either.
He's talking about his true beliefs and the way he sees public service.

13. Sapphire Blue, let me tell you something.

I've met Bob Casey several times, and he is a genuinely honest, intelligent, and all-around nice guy. While I may not agree with him on every issue, he would be a much better representative of PA than that sanctimonious, arrogant, K-Street stooge Santorum. AND Santorum stole our tax dollars to cyber-school his kids! As if he's not getting enough money from Big Pharma and the Oil Companies, huh?

I'm sick of being embarrassed by "our" (Virginia's third) senator with his "man-on-dog" comments and telling women they don't NEED to work outside the home. How about making big "announcements" to say that we did INDEED find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? He constantly makes a total ass of himself and makes PA look bad.

Bob Casey called me personally at home to discuss a letter I had written to him. We had a wonderful conversation for 45 minutes. I've had the opportunity to meet him a couple of times since and have been truly impressed.

We really need for Casey to win this election.

12. I think the fault is best laid at the door of a Republican Congress,
and a clueless Republican Administration.
