Did Bush Collude w/Pope to Foment a War of Civilizations?
The thought came to my head as I heard Elenor Clift on McGlaughlin say Bush is trying to rile up his base by claiming some kind of war of civilizations.

Could it be possible? Could it be that Bush colluded with the Pope to say something lnflammatory to rile up the Muslim world, so that people could step back and say, "Man, we really DO need to fight these guys - every time anyone says "boo" about Islam, they react violently."

I must say, the timing of this is VERY SKETCHY, coming into the elections and all.

3. Possible, but unlikely IMO. I think Dubya is very intimidated by
scholarly folk.

The Pope's remarks were not even addressed in a political setting, but to other scholars.

I think if Benedict wished to incite a wide-scale conflagration, he would have chosen a much more prominent venue. And his remarks would have been far sharper than they were, and his thesis different.

6. I wrote on another thread before the speech
that he's only in Germany to stir up the pot. No surprise. Fugg all religion. Fugg all fascists and fugg the papacy which always supports the worst atrocities on the planet from its inception.

7. Sure, why not
I don't even care the reasons or the players anymore. We just need to figure out how to end it or it is going to end us.

the world...and nothing the Pope says in a speech is a secret.
Whatever the venue, remarks like those will reverberate around the world. It is impossible to believe that he was totally unaware of the effects his remarks would have.
Would the Vatican have remained silent if some Muslim leader made remarks about the Crusades and the Inquisition and the Church spreading religion by the sword, even if it was in some remote mosque? I doubt it very much.

17. It's routinely done.
If the Pope complained about that, he'd be complaining about hundreds of imams each week.

Silly, really, to complain about routine and predictable behavior. One should save up one's hurt feelings for a worthy purpose, perhaps the killing of a nun or an attack on a church. But no adherent of the religion of peace would even dream of showing himself to be so apostate as to do those things. Why, his kith and kin would turn him out of the house, and faithful Muslims would surely shun him for his intolerance.

9. How can this be a war of civilizations...
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 12:16 PM by originalpckelly
when the people we are fighting (and I mean the real al-Qaeda) are not civilized? You see that is the problem with all of Bush's and the conservatives thinking, they assume it is a war of civilizations, so they compare the terrorists to our nation in order to justify their own inhumanity. Anyone who disagrees with another person and simply kills them is NOT civilized.

10. Just another test balloon to see how far
they can push things. No, it was no accident. Remember how the church interferred in the 2004 election? Remember priests who wouldn't give Kerry whatever rite they use? Remember chimps visit to the vatican? No, this was no accident.
