Abuse Victims Demand Lie Detector Test Of Jesuit Leader

September 15, 2006

By Associated Press

SPOKANE - Advocates for people abused by Catholic priests are demanding that the Northwest leader of the Jesuits take a lie detector test regarding his knowledge of past abuse by the former president of Gonzaga University.

Victims' groups doubt that abuse by the late Rev. John Leary that was revealed last week was only recently discovered in Jesuit files.

"How can the Jesuits settle cases involving Leary but claim they have never read his file? It defies common sense," said Barbara Blaine of Chicago, president of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

But the Rev. John D. Whitney of Portland, Ore., leader of the Oregon Province of Jesuits, declined the demand.

4. Is he human? Then yes - he could be lying
Edited on Sat Sep-16-06 02:54 PM by Solly Mack
The idea that "the cloth" somehow stops you from being human, with all that implies, is well..astounding.

Kinda like the courts maintaining the illusion that placing your hand on a bible means something

talk about "quaint" notions....

7. Yes.
As a practising Catholic, as someone with friends who are priests and nuns, I can categorically say that priests (and nuns, for that matter) do lie. Because they're humans, and humans lie.

And may I just say, in these cases, I believe that those that cover up accusations of sexual abuse by clergy should be punished by the Church by being stripped of their clergical positions and duties. Those accused should be tried in a court of law, and if found guilty, also lose their right to work as priests. In the former cases, whether the priests are found guilty should have no consequence on their punishment, for they are guilty of dereliction of duty.

8. I can tell you what my BIL experienced...
Edited on Sat Sep-16-06 03:04 PM by TwoSparkles
My BIL read, in his local paper, about an adult victim who was abused by a priest in a nearby
parrish. My BIL had been abused by the same priest. He kept the secret for more than three decades.

My BIL decided to break the silence, because the priest denied ever abusing the victim in the paper--and maligned the victim in the paper; accusing him of lying and filing false claims. My BIL knew this priest was a pedophile, and wasn't going to allow him to lie.

My BIL called the newspaper and told his story. Other victims of this priest emerged. Some of these victims had revealed their abuse history to spouses, therapists and friends throughout the years. Many were able to substantiate that they had complained about this priest or sought counseling for the abuse they suffered.

This priest fought all of these people--tooth and nail. The victims took the priest to court where they were put through the ringer. Their mental stability and honesty were attacked vociferously.

My BIL, who is a doctor, was attacked for never speaking of the abuse. They questioned why, a doctor--who is a mandatory child abuse reporter--would remain silent about child abuse. They accused him of selfishly covering up child abuse! His wife and children were put on the stand--to make the case for the priest, that my BIL never spoke of the abuse; therefore how could he have been abused? It was quite an emotional roller coaster.

In the end, the priest admitted that he did "something," but wouldn't go any further than that. He apologized to all of the victims, but the apology contained qualifications and no admission of wrong-doing. This priest admitted that he "went too far" and "never intended to hurt the children" and he said he was sorry if they were hurt.

My BIL has spoken with other victims who tell similar stories. The Catholic Church likes to position themselves as the victim of bad priests. However, they are STILL not validating victims. They're fighting these cases like rabid badgers and re-victimize the victims.

If the Catholic Church does not condone child abuse, then why do they behave this way when victims come forward? The culture of the church enabled pedophiles to molest children, and it appears that now--the culture of the church is protecting its own by sacrificing these victims--once again.

It's an abomination.

9. IMO, they exspend more breath telling lies than they ever
do telling the truth, about themselves, about their church, about their congregations.

10. absolutely- they are 100% human
and just as they would kill, molest, rape, steal, and any other negative human action, they will lie and deny thier human failings.
The collar around thier necks doesn't restrain them from being fallable.
And in some cases terribly cruel and dangerous.
