Fiddling while the world burns
Edited on Fri Sep-15-06 04:55 PM by PaulaFarrell
Today has been a disturbing day for me. First thing this morning I read in the Independent that we have about 10 years to do something about climate change. That's all. After that it is too late. Goodbye world that we know.

I have to say that I have been worried about climate change many years, and done lots to keep my global footprint small, for what it's worth, but clearly not enough.

Climate change is the issue of our times. In the long run, and most likely the short, nothing else matters. It is the issue we will be judged by (should there be anyone around to judge us). Whilst it's easy to get involved in day to day issues of life, the true measure of ourselves is how we address this issue. If we ignore it, we will be villified by our children, assuming any survive. If we address it, at the worst, at least we will have tried.

It is frustrating trying to get this issue the attention it deserves. It seems insurmountable. I certainly feel helpless. But what exactly are the options? To ignore it until we individually burn along with the planet?

What is expecially frustrating is when a site like DU buries its head in the sand too.

As if to prove the point, this thread dies a death. Unlike the vitally important threads on e-coli in spinach..

4. Wow...
These are trying times. The world poses many threats of our eminent demise. The brain can only handle so much. I find that yoga helps when I feel that the world is out of control, which is almost always. peace, Kim

5. Actually, there are only a few threats worth worrying about
Global warming dwarfs the them all. Yoga won't help, Kim. What's happening is happening.

6. A crazy fool with his finger on the red button trumps them all.

7. I don't
A crazy fool does not have the potential to wipe out all life on earth. That is the prospect that runaway global warming presents.

8. I think that DUers are acutely aware of the issue.
However, we have more pressing matters at hand, that is taking back the Congress.

If we don't do that, there will be no way that we will be able to get responsible policies put forward to do something about climate change.

We *should* be talking about it, but I'm not sure if the bulk of the electorate is as aware as us very intelligent DUers are. It's just not a winning strategy for us at this time.

So, regrettably the strategy *has* to be.

1. Gain a majority in Congress.
2. Then, change the world.

I wish it wasn't so.
