What's the best way to handle a Christian Republican in the workplace?
Edited on Fri Sep-15-06 03:41 PM by icymist
I have to work with this guy, who, at times, likes to talk (at length) about war games and his involvement. This guy never seemed a threat until last night when he started going on about AFA and the Gays and how "they (AFA) brought down Ford" through boycott. When I asked about Ford getting bad publicity through the last five years for the Firestone tires blowing out on their SUV's, well I got a lot of discussion about how the Gays were trying to grasp more than they were meant to....so on and so forth! I have to work wit h this guy at least every week. This is in a nursing home and this jerk has already 'informed' me that all somebody has to do is complain that "abuse" 'might' have occurred and I would then be out of a job until "the investigation was complete"! :eyes: Should I just blow this guy off and watch him from a distance?

16. He's sly. The original talk began about what sort of Truck I should buy.
I mentioned that Ford had recently announced that half of it's workforce would soon be laid off. His reply was "Good! The AFA boycott is working!" When I asked about what the AFA was, the Christian part was put into play by his going on that Ford "Had this coming" for it's 'Practices to wards recognizing Gays very "loudly" and allowing their partnerships'. Believe you and me, the Christian thing was brought up by him.

I have a secretary who is also a MORON repub Christian FOLLOWER. I have grown to just ignore her and say I'm too busy to bother discussing such BS.

What I would rather do when I hear her SPINNING is call her a MORON to her face, laugh and go about my business. If this is not someone you have to deal with regularly, I'd suggest that. Tell them they're gullible, and a brainwashed follower, and you don't have time to waste listening to them spew garbage.

I've had to deal with flat tires after a long shift because of my big mouth. Don't let on, but make the complaint to HR. And try to not get into any more conversation that makes you uncomfortable. The work environment should be neutral ground, where your opinion on politics is just as private as any others, but if he's made threats make sure somebody knows.

12. His threat to you works both ways. All "somebody" (you) have
to do is complain that "aubse" "might" have occurred and he would then be out of a job until the investigation is complete. However, if you have a personnel office, I would tell them you have been
threatened by this guy that he would file a bogus complaint against you. You could also request a policy statement to employees that everyone should refrain from political comments in the work place.
What is "AFA"?

(I think you meant to type "threat", not "treat", right?

17. Ignore him, you will never get him to see the truth
He has been told that the ancient book that he opens on Sunday mornings is the truth and the way and the light. Then they tell him that he must remain faithful and that people will throw stones at him.
His mind has been totally cleaned of the ability to think for himself. You will never get anywhere with him.

I know, I have dealt with these idiots at work. I don't even acknowledge them unless I need something from them because every time you talk to them the just go into their little I'm the way messages, trying to save your soul.

Now if I am totally bored yet pissed off at what the Reich Wing has been doing, I will poke them with some facts just to raise their blood pressure, then I leave them in isolation for a long time again.
Today I did just that. I fired off a little fact about the cost of investigating Clinton and his little BJ vs the 9/11 investigation. Two line is all I wrote. I got back a mega email full of the Republican talking points straight from Bill Oreally himself or so they sounded.
I did poke him all day then until he tried to blame 9/11 on Clinton and claim that the Clinton administration did nothing to prevent terrorism. Then I unloaded on him with facts and told him to go home and read that this weekend instead of the Good Book. Then invited him to prove otherwise to me on Monday.

Monday will come and I will not give him the satisfaction of acknowledging his response regardless.

45. Thank you. Yours is some of the best advice I've read yet.
I have to work with this guy in nursing. (This is to everyone here) Just because it's nursing, all the rules have been changed. It may not do me all that good to go to the Director Of Nursing, explaining that this guy may say these things, for I may very well find myself without a livelihood until it's cleared up. I'm one awful good nurse, have been a CNA for over sixteen years, and can play this political game they play. I have never came upon someone playing war-games while professing fundie teachings, like this guy before. I'm just not sure how to handle him.

19. Try a few Jesus quotes: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
If that doesn't work, they "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's and to God that which is God's." "Judge not lest ye be judged," is good too as is the sermon on the mount.

The other is the direct antireligious approach of: "How quaint! But I guess we are all entitled to our tribal superstitions and customs...as long as you don't try to foist them upon others..."

28. Definitely report him for threatening you.
That's the first and most important step you can take. Then, start a dated journal detailing both his threat and the report you made to your superiors making sure they know you are keeping this journal. After that, feel free to disagree with this asshole anytime you like but record any threatening or harassing remarks he makes. After each occurrence give a copy of the entry to your superior and ask them what can be done to alter this threatening/harassing environment. Unless your superior is a complete idiot, they will see that your co-worker is quickly removed. If he/she is an idiot, then they will make your life hard which is where your journal will really come in handy. Workplace intimidation is illegal and the suit you can lay on the company will not only end the harassment but their jobs as well.

Good luck.

Edited on Fri Sep-15-06 04:54 PM by Divernan
When you copy it to your supervisor, tell him/her (in writing also) to keep a copy of it in your personnel file. You COULD even tell them you checked with a lawyer friend (that would be me) who advised you to do this. You might express your concern that this guy is forcing his political opinions and religious beliefs on residents of the nursing home (by speaking loudly to you in front of one or more of them) and you are concerned they may be upset.

Let us know how this works out.

Noting the nature and time of his "threat" is an excellent idea. Don't tell him, if he chooses to do that sort of thing, let him dig his own grave, as it were.

Beyond that, he is free to hold and express his views.

Frankly I'm a bit surprised that people here would joke about hurting someone because of their political ideology.

62. first let your d.o.n. know about this
and then, become very annoying to him. "out Christian" him. Give him a t-shirt at Christmas time with a sequinced Crucifix on it and a card that tells him how happy you are for his "witness". Do it on front of the rest of the staff so that he's embaressed by it. Then, follow him around for several weeks asking why he doesn't wear it. Ask him to pray with you constantly, especially when he's very busy. Start bringin copies of "Guns 'n Ammo" to work. Ask him when he's going to take you out on "maneuvers". Loudly tell the rest of the staff how you and he are "best friends, just like brothers". Ask him if he wants to come on a protest march with you and the Phelps gang. Constantly ask him questions about politics and when he responds, gaze at him like he's the bestest teacher you've ever had. Tell everyone how he should go into politics because he's so smart. Start subtley(sp) or he'll be suspicious. But, if you play your cards right he'll be so annoyed by you that he'll leave.

63. Reminds me of what I told an old boss of mine, joked about firing me
I worked for a japanese auto company (subsidiary) and the one japanese fellow used to mess with me a lot (It was all fun). So one day we are sitting down for lunch, just the two of us as we had missed the scheduled lunch.

He said: "What you do if I fire you." And smiled at me.

I replied: "I am a crazy american, I will come in here with a gun and take all of you out." without laughing.

He nearly choked then said "Ok, good enough for me, I keep you."

For a brief moment when I said that I think he believed me :)
