NEY: I'M GUILTY, I'M SORRY, I DRINK
TPM Muckraker has the story.

Yet another 'cry for me, I'm a sinner' brand of Republican. (- All emphasis below is mine.)

I have made serious mistakes and am sorry for them. I am very sorry for the pain I have caused to my family, my constituents in Ohio and my colleagues.

I know that this plea agreement will probably forever change the way people view my public service. I regret this very much because I hope and believe that I have helped people through my work, and I hope that someday the good I have tried to do will be measured along side the mistakes I have made.

These have been difficult times, and I appreciate more than I can describe the support, encouragement and friendship that people from inside and outside my District have given to me and my family over the past months.

I have gone through a great deal of soul searching recently, and I have come to recognize that a dependence on alcohol has been a problem for me. I am not making any excuses, and I take full responsibility for my actions. Over the years, I have worked to help others, but now I am the one that needs help. I am seeking professional help for this problem I am hopeful that with counseling, time and the support of my family and friends, I will be able to deal with my dependency.

Boo-friggin-Hoo

Voted YES on prohibiting needle exchange & medical marijuana in DC. (Oct 1999)
Voted NO on subjecting federal employees to random drug tests. (Sep 1998) (... hmmm, guilt maybe?- FlDem5)

Voted YES on treating religious organizations equally for tax breaks. (Jul 2001)
Voted YES on responsible fatherhood via faith-based organizations. (Nov 1999
Rated 83% by the Christian Coalition: a pro-family voting record. (Dec 2003)

...and let's not forget, Ney signed the infamous
Contract with America>

10 bills in 1st 100 days of Congress.
Ney signed the Contract with America:
As Republican Members of the House of Representatives and as citizens seeking to join that body, we propose not just to change its policies, but to restore the bounds of trust between the people and their elected representatives. That is why, in this era of official evasion and posturing, we offer instead a detailed agenda for national renewal, a written commitment with no fine print.

Within the first hundred days of the 104th Congress, we shall bring to the House Floor the following bills, each to be given a full and open debate, each to be given a clear and fair vote, and each to be immediately available this day for public inspection and scrutiny:
The Fiscal Responsibility Act: Balanced budget amendment & line item veto
The Taking Back Our Streets Act: More prisons, more enforcement, more death penalty
The Personal Responsibility Act: Limit welfare to 2 years & cut welfare spending (which apparently, doesn't apply to wealthy, powerful politcians - just welfare recipients - FlDem5)
The Families Reinforcement Act: Use tax code to foster families
The American Dream Restoration Act: Repeal marriage tax; cut middle class taxes
The National Security Restoration Act: No US troops under UN command; more defense spending
The Senior Citizens Fairness Act: Reduce taxes on Social Security earnings
The Job Creation and Wage Enhancement Act: Incentives to small businesses
The Common Sense Legal Reforms Act: Limit punitive damages
The Citizen Legislature Act: Term limits on Congress (not a problem for Ney anymore, eh - but what and odd way to enforce it - FlDem5)

2. Scoundrel Using Alcoholism as an Excuse?! Grrrrrrr
I, as a recovering alcoholic, find this to be absolutely disgusting. Ney... your breaking the law, is about you. Be a man, and take responsibility... it's one of the 12 steps.

20. I don't think so
He's going to have to sing like a bird to get any breaks, which I'm sure he'll do, but I suspect that he'll wind up doing some time in a "country club" prison somewhere in any case. They're not fun by any measure, but they're not the lowest circle of hell, either; plus he's lost the right to vote and he's a convicted felon, which makes him pretty well screwed for the remainder of his useless existence.

About which I can only say that there's a VERY long lineup of others before him on my sympathy list. :nopity:

8. Funny, he doesn't look too remorseful on the links
And was it booze that kept him from confessing months ago? Was he drunk all that time and only now sobered up enough to say that he did what they said he did?

I call bullshit on his epiphany.

9. How could he be guilty? Doesn't he have "Moral Republican Values" ?
I loved the Thom Hartmann show earlier this week because he was able to straighten out a terribly UNINFORMED Republican when it comes to morals and values.

The caller listens to Thom on Air America, but he was also brainwashed by Faux and RW radio. (Key word is "was")

------------------------------------------

Republican Caller: "Thom, I like your show and listen sometimes. And when you asked why some voters just don't get it. I'd like to answer. See, even if my congressman isn't perfect, I vote for him because Republicans have very high moral values"

Thom: "Wow. --- Okay... WOW. (sigh) - Let's just go down the list of beef's that you have and you can explain to us why you feel that way. Tell us why you believe Republicans have high moral values, yet you evidently don't hold the Democratic Party to such high regard"?

Caller: "Well, uh. They just.. they have real high moral values because, ah.. ... I mean.. they... I dunno... they're... well, I heard on another show, uh... well.."

Thom: Think it over carefully, don't rush to a response. I want you to give me an honest answer. Don't tell me they have high moral values, tell me why you think that way."

Caller: "Ok. yeah, I see. ..um. Well. they.. the Republicans are.. they umm.. .. uh.."

Thom: "That's okay, I'm not going to cut you off. Think about your answer as long as you need to. I'm really interested in your response and would like to understand how you came to such a conclusion.

Caller: "Oh, yeah. I remember why!! I'm a Republican 'Cas Democrats are against Christians, churches, and religion!" http://eliteleague.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/duh!.gif

Thom: "Uh... ... Can you tell me how it came to be that you believe that Democrats are against Christians, religion and churches? I'm very religious, my family is very religious, and I'd wager to say that there are just as many, if not more Democrats with high moral values than there are of Republicans"

Caller: "But y'all wanted to ban Christmas and Easter and...."
------------------------------------------

For the remainder of the call, Thom went in length with the uniformed caller asking him where he had received such bogus information (turns out he listens to Fax, Rush, etc..)

By the time the caller hung up, he had a 100% turn-around in his opinion and realized that he had been duped by the right wing media.

Thom discussed people like Bob Ney, Duke Cunningham, Abramoff, etc.. and in the end, went back to the caller's views of "MORALS and VALUES"

I kid you not.. By the time the caller hung up with Thom, I wouldn't be surprised if he drove straight over to his Election Division and changed his affiliation! http://eliteleague.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/lol!.gif

Thom rocked !!!

12. Another victim of demon rum
Hallelujah, he has seen the light! Now, let's see. Who did he apologize to? His family, yeah; colleagues, of course; and . . . his constituents in Ohio. Uh, how about the rest of us, Mr. Ney? The public trust you violated (violated in war-time, I might add) put the entire United States at increased risk of a terrorist attack and needlessly endangered millions of innocent lives outside of Ohio. No apology for the rest of us? And you had the gall to issue press releases and statements about "baseless accusations"?

Shame on you, Mr. Ney. And more than shame, you should be tried for crimes against the Imperial Empire of the United States of America for willful acts that betrayed all of us to the danger of terrorist acts.

{Dumbass GOP kool-aid swilling persona off}

Hey, that whole "beat them over the head with fear and terrorism" thing is sort of fun. And in this case, almost warranted.

15. Hmm, I wonder...
a coworker of mine had a boyfriend who was a staffer for a Repuke who tried to pass himself off as a holier than thou choir boy. She said he was a raging alcoholic and a womanizer to boot. He was always coming on to the young interns especially.

I wonder if it was him? Of course, there are so many to choose from, it could be just about anybody up there on the Repuke side.

16. If he does an honest 8th Step, he's got a lot of amends to make.
Ney has probably never thought twice about all the people his actions have harmed. Hopefully, his recovery will include taking this step.
