All Segways recalled! Return your Segways!!
Any frivolous multimillionaires reading? If so, and you have a Segway, you need to return it, for your own safety:

Segway is recalling all 23,500 of the self-balancing scooters it has shipped because of a software glitch that can make its wheels unexpectedly reverse direction, throwing off the rider -- and in at least one incident, break some teeth.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday said consumers should stop using the vehicles immediately. Segway is cooperating on the voluntary recall.

Segway has received six reports of problems with the Personal Transporter, resulting in head and wrist injuries.

Ha! I remember when they were saying Segway's would transform the way people traveled to work and about town. Guess they forgot to make it actually WORK first.

1. This is a belated put-on by the Segway Company
to give The Shrubbery That Walked Somewhat Like A Man and excuse for idiotically falling off his.

2. Too fast for the sidewalk, too slow for the street

7. Dumb toy, great technology.
Segway was an outgrowth of their work developing wheel chairs to climb stairs. They also have done great things in medical design (insulin pumps). I feel bad for Dean Kaman and DEKA...they are a great small American hi-tech company; this is a tough setback.

If you can believe it, I came up with it BEFORE Cheney shot an 80 year old man in the face. :spray:

11. Only 23, 500 sold?
How many are gathering dust?

I live 7 minutes from my job by car. If they weren't so fucking expensive, I'd buy one. (There are only so many days a year you can bicycle in). ONE dealer in NJ, and by appointment only. And Segway doesn't have the balls to put a retail price on the website.

$4500 for the XT is going rate on Ebay, expensive little buggers. Hmmmmm, 12 mile range.

Shit, I can get a motorized barstool for $1850 and have even more fun.

12. A good liberal friend of mine has one
He lives in Washington, DC. He had a car that got stolen and totaled when he moved there so he opted to just get a Segway since he doesn't live that far away from his job, and he can take it on the subway.

He also liked to put on a top hat and cape and drive around (he looks like a stereotypical Disney villain with his dark black hair and maustach/goatee).

Last I heard, he was trying to outfit it to look more like a Roman chariot with a shield on the front and really wanted to install blades that come out of the center of the tires at the push of a button, but he probably won't do that. :)

13. Wow, this sucks
My friend owns the Segway franchise here in Milwaukee.

They go out in large groups of Segway riders along the bike trails. It looks like a blast...

14. say it isn't so
I know someone who is a polio survivor whose knees are getting progressively worse, but he can ride his Segway damned near anywhere he can't walk. It's a marvelous aid for certain people and I hoped it would become cheaper and more widely available someday.
